Rare antique Biedermeier tobacco box, Germany early 19th c, hand-painted

Large table tobacco box (tabakdose), Europe (most likely Germany), early 19th century antique, Biedermeier style. The body is made of metal (probably tin), with decorative brass elements with relief embossing on the top and bottom, and hand-painted. Large dining room snuff box (tabakdose), Europe (probably Germany), early 19th century antique, Biedermeier style. The item depicts two’gallant’ scenes Fête galante painted by the master: a romantic couple against the backdrop of an idyllic landscape and a lady sitting in a boat accompanied by her gentleman. The painting style features a delicate pastel/ochre colour palette and meticulous attention to detail in the faces, clothing and elements of the surrounding landscape. Pastoral and gallant scenes were very popular in decorative art at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolising the refinement, romantic ideals and aesthetic moods of the Sentimentalism and early Biedermeier periods. Height 17.5 cm, diameter approx. The condition is good antique, previously used, corresponding to the age of the item (about 200 years old), with signs of natural ageing and use (scratches, scuffs on the painting, small dents and deformations). The lid is missing. Please see the photos. The style and technique used to make the jar are very similar to those used by the I. Johann (I) Stobwasser’s manufactory in Braunschweig became widely known at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries for its production of lacquered and painted decorative items. Its name is often associated with a certain style – delicate miniature painting under lacquer, soft pastel or ochre colours, as well as scenes and pastoral motifs. Stowasser and the workshops in his circle produced various items, mainly boxes and cases (including snuffboxes and tobacco jars), decorative boxes, often made of papier-mâché or lacquered metal, which were popular among the European bourgeoisie and nobility. Comes as shown in pictures. Condition and size shown in photos. Rare Antique Hertwig Nodding Dog or Bear. Bisque Porcelain. Germany Early 1900s

An extremely rare early example of a nodding dog or bear, made of bisque porcelain in Germany in the early 1900s. It is probably by Hertwig and would make a superb addition to a collection of’nodders’ or vintage toy collectibles. The matt porcelain is white with brown hand-painted colour to the animal’s face and body. The head is permanently attached to the body by a wire pin which is in good working order and, as you can see from the video, there is plenty of nodding action! This lovely little piece, which is unmarked, is in excellent condition. There is very small nick underneath the head – I only noticed it when studying the photos so it’s really hard to see. However I have taken it into account when pricing. Please note that some of these photos were taken in golden yellow sunlight. The more accurate colour is on the video. Do have a good look at all the pics and ask away if you require any further info or images. Nose to tail the figure is approx 8 cms (3.15 inches) long and stands 4.5 cms (1.75 inches) tall.

Rare Antique Children Carousel Bear, Germany early 20th Century. A wooden carved children’s carousel bear decorated with polychrome colors, made in Germany around 1920. Original unrestored condition, partially repainted, traces of use according to the old age, some minor imperfections. A great addition to any sophisticated interior decoration. The first carousel horses were created in the 18th century for the entertainment of aristocrats. The enthusiasm spread to broad sections of the population and the Vienna Prater was opened with a carousel in 1766. Germany developed into a center of carousel construction. Famous manufacturers included Friedrich Heyn, Hermann Thümmel, Karl Müller and Fritz Botmann. The artfully carved horses and classic carriages were supplemented with exotic animals such as lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras and elephants. Pioneers of the first generation of showmen in the United States were Gustav A. Loof and Frank Hrubetz, who designed and constructed great rides. The world wars of the 20th century meant the end of carousel art. Many originals were destroyed and replaced by plastic copies.
