OUR LAND AND COUNTRY: Life and History, Treasures and Splendors, from Plymouth Rock to the Golden Gate. Photographed in the Finest Art and in the Widest Expansion of Modern Pictorial Illustration. Published in 1892 by the C. Nichols Company, Springfield, Mass. 11 x 9 hardcover. Illustrated with black and white photos. Condition: GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Exterior as shown in photo, some minor surface wear. Expertly rebacked by a professional book conservator. New cloth spine, original cloth titles laid over. Text is clean and complete. No torn, loose or missing pages. Nice example of this very rare 19th-century American pictorial volume. This is a mammoth book loaded with more than 250 full-page black and white photos of 19th-century America rich panoramic views, colorful street scenes, stately buildings, historic landmarks, palatial mansions, industrial wonders, the unspoiled vistas of the far west, and more. Its a grand, oversized volume of the sort that became very popular in the 1890s as the fledgling art of photography began to be incorporated into book publishing. The beauty of this particular collection is its diversity. Its not overly focused on any one area of the country (some collections of this era tend to dwell on western lands). Youre as likely to find photos from Rhode Island as from Colorado. On one page you’re looking at a Cape Cod lighthouse, on the next, a Comanche camp on the Great Plains, or a steamboat plying a sleepy Florida river. The text narrative complements the photographs, furnishing extended descriptions of the scenes depicted. Below youll find my own summary of the more than 250 photographs featured in this book. Further down the page, Ive included about sixty examples of the photos so you can see with your own eyes just how truly great they are. Go on, kick back, spend a few minutes in the 19th century. Early Worcester porcelain teapot Dr Wall period, c 1765-80. Feather-moulded and painted in underglaze blue with with floral sprigs and insects: the Feather Mould Floral Pattern. Extremely Rare Original Spanish American War Military Issue Straw Hat, Brought Home as a Battlefield Souvenir by a US Sailor on the U. VERY RARE original Spanish American War black straw hat. Issued during the hot weather military combat and brought home by the identified US Sailor from the USS FRANKLIN. Scans show it all. Nicely made of a straw type of material and issued that way….. Then stained black as an added protection against the sun and weather. Has a nice 5-pointed star sewn on the center of the crown…… Made of cloth, with military gilt sequins sewn on it, as shown. Nice 3/4″ wide black hat band attached around the base of the crown as shown, with nice Navy “tail in the back. Has nice 1 1/2 wide leather head band inside the crown. Inside sweat band is dry, and several cracks, but it is all there, relatively sound, and all in place. On the top of the inside crown most of an original ownership label remains, on which is written: William P. I assume that this was the Navy sailor who wore the hat since it was brought home by this US sailor. Hat is in very good. A few occasional flaking spots only. Has one small hole in the back of the brim which appears to have been put there to hang it on a nail. Bottom measures about 12″ x 12 5/8″ overall. Inside head opening measures 6 1/4″ wide x 7″ long. Crown has a gentle slope to it, and is 3 1/8 high. On the outside the brim is about 2″ wide in the back and 2 1/2″ wide on the sides and in the front. I was also told that this could have been an enemy Spanish battlefield/combat souvenir taken by this sailor, although I don’t know. Seems more likely that it belonged to the US sailor. I have never seen one of these available for sale. VERY OLD AND VERY RARE, ESPECIALLY WITH THE OWNERSHIP ID!! And this is a nice example of such a nice, RARE MUSEUM-QUALITY HAT, for a variety of display and collection objectives!! PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!!
