Late 18th, Early 19th Century. Made of Iron with a fruitwood base. In reality this dates to around 1770 and most likely made in France. Lovely patina and perfect to go with oak and country furniture. These type of candlesticks were used as a portable candlestick that could also be hooked onto an a beam in a barn for safety rather than risk falling over if simply stood on the floor or beam. Or used in mining, hence the origins of the name. The candle could be set low inside the spiral and ten screwed up as the candle burned down so as to reduce the risk of the candle falling out and causing a fire. Very simple but very clever invention. Height approx 18.5cm. Dia of base approx 9cm. Please be your judge on condition.

A rare early 19th century antique oak Porter's chair
A charming Georgian Porter’s chair constructed in solid oak, dating to the first quarter of the 19th century. With substantial locking cupboard backrest over a single seat. The chair is of good proportions and originally made to allow a servant to sit whilst waiting to serve. There is a cupboard forming the backrest which has an iron lock and key. This would have been used to store valuable items. This could signify that the chair was for a head butler or Porter who had more responsibility, and also held the key. Behind the seat is a useful single shelf, which held items that could be accessed by any staff member. The chair is particularly unusual and most likely unique. It is certainly unlike any other chair we have found through our research. Made from solid oak and utilising pegged joints and hand forged iron nails. The thick timber carcass featuring little embellishment, except for chamfered front legs. The simple but supportive armrests suggest that the user did indeed have to sit for longer periods, and was offered some level of comfort by these. The design is reminiscent of a traditional English squat bacon back settle. To the cupboard interior is a single removable shelf. The lock mechanism is still fully operational, and quite unusual in that it appears to have been originally installed upside down. Found in good warm honest colour and with nice patina. Height – 141.1cm. Widest point – 67.4cm. Seat height – 44.3cm. Seat depth – 36.8cm. Backrest height – 93cm. Seat width – 44.5cm. Structurally sound and ready to use. Evidence of historic non active woodworm. Historic wear to the bottom of the legs. One leg is ever so slightly short and means the chair sits slightly unevenly. This could easily be rectified with a small spacer under the back leg. We have chosen to leave the chair as found to give the end user this choice. Historic repairs to the base of the front legs. Certification: Certified Authentic – includes signed Certificate of Authenticity (COA) with full provenance documentation. Provenance: Ex-private European collection, legally acquired from international auctions; Post-Medieval / Renaissance European Military Sphere. Item Specifications & Exact Dimensions. Object: Antique Cast Bronze Spherical Lead Shot / Bullet Casting Mold Matrix (Single Half). Culture / Period: Post-Medieval / Renaissance Military Era (16th Century). Date Range: Circa 16th Century AD c. Dimensions: 2.5 cm (25 mm / 0.98 inches) Total Height. Material: Cast Bronze (Copper Alloy). This is an exceptional antique artifact Ula from the Fijian Islands. The estimated age on this piece is late 18th century to early 19th. It is carved from an exceptionally beautiful and dense piece of ironwood and is what I would consider a large example when comparing to other objects of its type. Check my other listings for more oceanic art pieces like this one. There are some age related cracks (checks) none of which cause structural damage to the club. Please examine the photos closely and ask any questions prior to purchasing. The patina is absolutely gorgeous and the well worn tavatava chip carving on the handles show great age with many years in use.
