This exceptional Burmese temple sculpture depicts the sacred Hintha (Hamsa), the mythical celestial bird that symbolizes purity, wisdom, and good fortune in Burmese Buddhist tradition. Richly decorated in the distinctive Mandalay style, the sculpture is hand carved from a dense native Burmese hardwood and lavishly inlaid with hman-zi-shwe-cha-traditional mosaics of individually set mirror and colored glass. Unlike the hollow lacquer Hintha figures that are more common, this piece is carved from a substantial block of hardwood with separately carved wings attached to the body. The sculptor covered nearly every visible surface with finely carved raised scrolls, foliate ornament, and stylized feather motifs before painstakingly setting hundreds of tiny mirror and emerald-green glass tesserae by hand. The craftsmanship is exceptional, and the dramatic silhouette makes it an impressive display piece from every angle. Based on its construction, decorative techniques, and traditional Mandalay ornamentation, this sculpture was most likely produced in Burma (Myanmar) during the late Konbaung tradition or early colonial period, approximately the late 19th to early 20th century. It reflects the enduring craftsmanship of Burmese court and temple workshops, where mirror inlay and richly carved relief decoration were hallmarks of prestigious devotional and decorative objects. 12½ inches high. 8 inches long. 5½ inches deep. Remarkably, the mirror and colored glass inlay appears virtually complete, with no obvious losses that I could find. The carving remains crisp throughout, while the original finish exhibits attractive, honest age-related wear that enhances its character and authenticity. The piece is offered exactly as found. Other than light dusting, it has not been cleaned or restored, as I prefer to leave museum-quality objects in their original state. The density of the hardwood and the secure condition of the inlay are a testament to the quality of traditional Burmese craftsmanship. A remarkable example of traditional Burmese decorative arts and an outstanding addition to a collection of Southeast Asian, Buddhist, or Asian antique sculpture.
