Bottom spoked end: 3″ Height x 3/4″ gap Width. Offered for your review and consideration is this early to mid 19th century Ame ri can antique primitive hand carved chestnut rope bed tightener or bed screw turn. It was recently discovered here in southern New Hampshire during an estate clean-out of an early residence with an attached barn and carriage sheds. It is a true New England primitive hand tool, completely fashioned by hand and made from local chestnut wood, once prevalent in the northeast and found all over New England before it suffered blight. The rope bed turn screw is comprised of two parts, the carved chestnut, sturdy doweled handle which inserts into the main, spoked end chestnut shaft. The’T’ shaped design would allow the user to insert the key onto the looped rope in the rope bed’s side board and turn it, tightening it to give better support to the goose feather down or straw filled linen mattresses of that era. The beds would have carved wood nuts to hold them into the newly tightened position. Good to Very Good overall antique condition. This item is in the category “Antiques\Primitives”.
