Rare Early 19th Century AMERICAN Primitive Carved Wood & Painted WASH BOARD
November 10, 2022
For sale is a very early 19th century American carved wood wash board. This is a very primitive early design, likely made around the time the wash board was invented in the 1830s. It’s made from a single piece of hardwood and has hand carved grooves on both sides. Also features a hand painted flower design on the top. You can tell by the wear along the top edge of the wood, the paint was already there before the wear. The wash board has a beautiful patina from use over nearly 200 years! The grooves have partly worn down, especially in the middle, and have attained a smooth finish. This is from many years of use scrubbing clothes. The wash board measures 54cm long by 12cm wide (21″ x 4 3/4″). This is a very rare piece of American washing history! There are very few wash boards of this age left in existence, especially in this condition. It’s a museum quality piece, you won’t be disappointed.
