This marble is a rare find, having a lobed solid core with a fantastic corkscrew twist. The projecting lobes are what defines this type, and in this case they are spun into a great spiral revolving tightly through the marble. The’peaks’ of the lobes are neatly picked out in jelly pink rods; and the’valleys’ are laid with ultramarine in a classic peppermint colour scheme; enhanced by the clean white base colour. Lobed marbles are distinct from ridged or standard varieties of solid core and are very sought after by collectors. The marble dates from between 1860 – 1880; with a hand-faceted pontil indicating production during this early period of the German cane glass marble industry. Marbles from this phase are harder to find; and valued for their smooth finish. The core colour contributes to value and desirability: white is the most common; followed by yellow then orange, with other colours such as baby blue, red and green being considered unusual or rare. Sometimes the core is striped or ribbed with thin rods of colours, and occasionally the core is composed of panelled panes. Antique marbles in the solid core class are always a sought-after variety because of their charming colours and structure – they usually have a clear glass matrix with a decorative surround, encompassing the central solid core which usually reaches from top to bottom. They are one of the fundamental types produced by makers working in the 19th c German glass factories, and come in a delightful range of styles and colour combinations. And rare high grade solid silver snuff box of oval curved form with an embossed fluted decorated lid and reeded body. The lid has a central cartouche with the engraved initials “GK”. Rich silver-gilt (gold washed) interior. Tested as 900 (900/1000) or higher solid silver fineness. Rare French hallmarks, Minerva head with letter “C”, a very unusual double headed stamp, a makers mark and another swan or reversed “S” type stamp. In very good condition, no nasty dents, splits, holes, repairs. There is a couple of dints to the underside (please inspect end photograph). Hinge in good order, being strong and closing the lid securely, the decoration is in excellent condition and the interior silver-gilt is rich and bright.
