Rare Antique Silver-Plated Ashtray Flemish Baroque Late 19th-Early 20th. A masterfully crafted antique ashtray, blending practical function with rich artistic storytelling in the tradition of Northern European craftsmanship. This exquisite antique ashtray, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, is a fine example of applied art in the Flemish or Baroque revival style. Made of silver-plated metal, it measures 9.5 cm in diameter and weighs 80 grams. The circular form features four curved slots for cigarettes and a finely decorated handle with scrolling. At the center of the ashtray is a detailed genre scene reminiscent of the works of Dutch masters like Pieter Bruegel or Jan Steen, depicting a cozy domestic feast. Surrounding it are four equally detailed vignettes portraying. Musicians and dancing figures. A learning or reading scene. Peasant or children at play. A rustic animal or hunting-themed scene. Without the frame : Height 7,8 cm 3.07 in. Width 6,7 cm 2.64 in. With the frame : Height 9,2 cm / 3.62 in. Width 8,2 cm / 3.23 in. No damage on the portrait. To be noted that the frame is original. He is most definitely well to do wearing his beautifully detailed finery. We call this panel. “GENT SMOKING A CLAY PIPE”. Condition is EXCELLENT, which is remarkable when one considers its age of 400 years. It will be very well packed. About the deveopments and styles of pipes. By the early part of the 17th century, the clay tobacco pipe industry began to develop in many local centres throughout Britain and in many parts of the Netherlands.
