This product is a rare antique bronze mortar and pestle possibly from the 17th or 18th century. Weighs over 5 pounds. Very unique one of a kind piece. Made from a crude casting. Sits a little lopsided. Rings are a little wavy as they go around. Bottom not perfectly round. Doesn’t sit perfectly flat. Rocks a little from side to side. Has an imperfection or indention from casting on the bottom as seen in photos. It does not go through. Inside bottom is thick and solid. Measures approximately 4 inches tall by 5 inches across the top. Pestle measures approximately 7 inches long. Looks to have seen some use over the decades. Please examine photos for more details. Highly detailed with elephant headdress and a beautiful uplifted trunk. The tusks act as a pen rest. 6.5″ by 5.5″ by 4.75 made circa 1920, likely German or Austrian. It’s a beautiful rare form. Looks to have been mounted at one point and does not rest flat. You would need to make a small cut on the added bar for it to lay level. Dent in base on left side. This is an amazing bronze bust by Karl Hagenauer, it’s very early as it’s signed Germany not Austria. Also fully signed Hagenauer and where looks like a registration number. I believe this could be the head and shoulders of Josephine Baker? Who they were known to do, most now are only seen in museums. Goldsmith Carl Hagenauer founded what became the Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien in 1898. His oldest son, Karl, who would eventually assume leadership of the family business, enrolled at the Vienna School of Applied Arts at age eleven. There he studied with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and created designs for the Wiener Werkstätte art collective. After wartime service in the infantry, he resumed his training and qualified as an architect. He joined the family business in 1919.. Hagenauer was responsive to the change in public taste influenced by the popularity of the Vienna Secession. His stylized animals and whimsical creatures handcrafted in brass had broad appeal in domestic and American markets. Some were useful, such as mirrors, cigar cutters, ashtrays, candlesticks, bookends, hood ornaments and lamp bases. Other larger sculptures in wood and metal such as the iconic Josephine Baker in the collection of the Casa Lis Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum in Salamanca.
