Here on offer is a. Rare antique Aultcliff Pottery jardinière & candlesticks, c1920. (1842 – 12 March 1929) in 1883 he established the Bretby Art Pottery formally Henry Tooth & Co. He then established Ault Pottery at Swadlincote, Staffordshire in 1887 after leaving Bretby. Best known for his inventive use of coloured glazes and for art pottery of the period with Christopher Dresser designing for him in the 1890s between 1892 and 1896, a few examples can be viewed at the V&A museum in London. These pre-1900 Ault-ware pieces are rare. Ault’s company continued to use some Dresser moulds until the 1920s. 1923 the firm merged with the Ashby Potters’ Guild, and became known as Ault & Tuncliffe. The Ault & Tuncliffe mark was’ATLTD’ or’Aultcliff’. The firm traded as Ault Potteries Ltd from 1937 until 1975. Their wares were often larger pieces su. This is such a stylish set with wonderful hand painted design grey and black tones against a cream ground. They all feature owls sitting in a tree against a cloudy moonlight sky. The bases have the wonderfully art deco’AULTCLIFF’ impressed mark. None are particularly crisp, but take together it is easy to work out. There is crazing throughout. One candlestick has a hairline crack on the base. Jardinière has a couple of hairlines from the rim and superficial crack on the base, that are only to the glaze. The jardinière is 21cm tall by 24.5cm. The candlesticks are 15cm tall by 10cm. The set is offered in good antique condition. A rare and highly collectable set.
