Antique Infill Bronze / Brass Smoothing Plane Rare Early/ Mid 1800s L 7
February 23, 2021
Interesting plane probably from mid 1800s. Early infill plane of the type made by Slater, Spiers and Norris. It has a heavy cast bronze body with hardwood infill, but the way of securing the blade looks back to older wooden planes. There is a substantial wooden wedge, no adjustment mechanism, and no metal bridge to support the blade. Instead it is held by lugs cast in the sides of the body. The plane is in good condition generally with dust and marks of age and use. There is a crack in the wood infill at the back which probably goes right through along the grain, please see the last 4 photos.
