Here we have for sale a rare and early pair of fully adzed Robert “Mouseman” Thompson bookends. Both sport the signature mouse with the earlier “heart shape” tails, which dates them into the 1940s. They are both in very good original condition and have been given a very light clean and nourished and protected by the application of several coats of Gilboy’s beeswax polish, which is a 100% organic and natural product. The grain on both matches when placed side by side, which shows that they are a natural pair carved from a single block of wood, as does the matching patination. The golden medulary rays to the side of each radiate out to add a touch of distinction and show they were carved from the very best part of the tree. To note they may have been dropped at some time in the past as there are a couple of nicks and nibbles to the edges of the rims and the tail of one mouse has had a small bash. It is not unusual to find earlier Mouseman pieces with older minor damage as they were made some 80 years ago, in a time when Mouseman was made to be used, not consigned to display cabinets. Likely these fell off the desk years ago, or something similar. The damage is minor and to be expected from pieces that have been regularly handled, nevertheless needs pointing out. (I have tried to show this in close up on the last two of the photos, so please view them carefully, along with all the others, to see condition). They are a lovely colour, medium fumed with a rich dark aged patina. The mice are pleasantly plump, animated and very skillfully carved. These earlier made bookends rarely come onto the market and are desirable, sought after collectors’ items. Dimensions are each H15.1cm x W9cm x D9.1cm approx. Please view all the photos carefully.
This increasingly rare antique very early Wemyss biscuit barrel is a unique piece of hand-painted ceramic art from Scotland. A very rare collector’s early West Country silver spoon made by Robert Wade I of Taunton c1600, with a characteristic fig-shape bowl and tapering hexagonal stem and having a fine quality cast Lion Sejant finial joined to the stem with a lap joint. Struck in the bowl and three times on the stem with the makers mark. Robert Wade I was earlier and much less prolific than his better-known son Robert Wade II. In a later bespoke Victorian fitted case. In very nice collector’s condition with no damage or repair, the marks are very worn but clear enough to be certain of my attribution. RARE EARLY ROBERT MOUSEMAN THOMPSON 3.8cm NAPKIN RING 1950s. A rare, early Robert’Mouseman’ Thompson napkin ring dating to the 1950s. These little napkin rings are few and far between. They measure just 3.8 cm, so much smaller than the later napkin rings that got bigger and bigger as the decades went on, eventually measuring 5 cm. I’ve taken a picture of this early napkin ring with a later example so the size can be compared, the vintage example is not included in the sale. Regarding condition, it has a split (see pictures) with a dark line running over it. Other than that, the condition is excellent. The mouse is particularly well carved with no damage, the colour is beautiful, and it has wonderful patina. Finding any early, rare Mouseman piece under 200 pounds is practically impossible, so it’s great to be able to bring something like this to the market which has age and rarity. It is also still very useable today.
RARE EARLY ROBERT MOUSEMAN THOMPSON TEA / DRINKS TRAY WITH 2 SIGNATURE MICE – 1940s. A superb hand carved Robert’Mouseman’ Thompson tea tray, dating to the 1940s. These rectangular shaped trays are very highly sought after by collectors as they are quite rare to the market, normally they are kidney shaped. It has 2 well carved early signature mice either end of the tray. It is a beautiful dark oak colour with wonderful patina. It has also been hand adzed to the top as well as all around the rim. It is in very good condition with just some minor wear to the rim (please see pictures) and some water staining to the top and bottom. Other than that, it just has wear consistent with the age of the piece, which is to be expected as it is now approximately 80 years old. A lot of these early trays are heavily stained and warped due to drinks spillages. This one is in nice condition, a good example. It measures 55.5 cm (including mice handles) x 31.2 cm.
