Rare Early Japanese Satsuma Blue Morriage Crane Jar Vase. Very fine piece of antique Satsuma in very rare form. Beautiful blue color morriage body with a crane on either side. White feathers of cranes are done in morriage while the rest is hand painted. Body of piece is in amazing condition. Small chips to underside of foot rim. Unfortunately jar is missing lid. Previous owner attempted to paint unglazed lip rim. Paint can most likely be easily removed with solvent. Most likely mid-19th Century, end of Edo period or early Meiji. Hard to find view and map This is one of the earliest maps of Yokohama harbor depicting American, British, Russian and European foreign trade ships, and western merchant visitation buildings of the area known as Gankiro which was restricted and had limited access. The port of Yokohama was surrounded by water to keep foreigners off the Tokaido Road, which was nearby and very dangerous since Samurai often used it to travel to Edo (now the capital of Tokyo). The Shogun also wanted to limit the contact between foreigners and the Japanese people. Beautiful woodblock printed quality, printed on two sheets, immediately frame able. ONLY ONE ABUMI NOT A PAIR. Made of iron and decorated with silver application and inlay this piece is truly unique. Collectors will be happy to see that this piece is signed. It is signed on the top section of the top support with several characters, see photos. The front of the abumi is decorated with a beautiful bird which is decorated in silver on the iron abumi. The bottom of the abumi shows some age rust which I left as found. The inside of the abumi is decorated with abalone or metallic type flakes. The piece measures approx 12 long x 9 1/2 high x 5 1/4 wide. Overall in nice condition but I do see that the small bar for the buckle is missing.
