Angie: This is a rare early 18 inch Kestner with the mark J or F on the perfect head, a turned head. The sleep eyes work beautifully and are brown, pink lids are so sweet; the shoulder head is in perfect shape with no chips cracks or rubs on the doll. She is named Angie on the tag is from 1880’s but most likely made in the late 1890’s with a lovely original good condition kid leather body that has working joints with no leaks, the doll is fully dressed in four layers of fine lace, batiste, and silk. She has on hand made leather kid boots and possesses tiny buttons 4 of them. The sweet doll has silk stockings and a lace bonnet which is enchanting. The underdress is all hand made as is the silk afternoon walking coat dress. A perfect doll for the discriminating doll collector. I love the style of the dress too, with the piping running down each side and all the lace, such perfection. I would estimate this rare purse dates to circa 1850 making it nearly 170 years old, this beautiful Victorian purse is crafted in faux Tortoiseshell with curved edges giving it a wonderful tactile feel, the colours are beautiful with rich deep oranges and browns creating such a superb effect, to the front it is mounted with the most beautiful yet unique very special carved dog head image, this is so very rare and has the most amazing detail, from the dogs very life like unusual eyes, his detailed nose and his very beautiful long hair, I would say this must be a female dog as the dog has a lovely bow to the top of her head, I have never seen a carved dog head like this ever, its so very rare, on the other side is a solid silver cartouche, the hinges work well and I believe are a white metal, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a wealthy Victorian Lady and been used on many an occasion, many years ago when things were so very different, this would have been a talking point as it is so unusual and rare, my photos really don’t do it justice, you will not find another like this on the market. The condition for its age is lovely, just one small pin missing, there is no clasp for closing, though it appear there never was a clasp, there is just a little spring back when closed, that being said it doesnt detractat all from its rare beauty, just mentioned for accuracy. The pipe tomahawk is in excellent condition with no repairs or damage. Spontoon style head patterned after the pike heads of the Spanish Conquistadors and explorers. Nice head forged from the barrel of a gun. Octagonal barrel and rifling inside. Looking closely, you will see the seam where the hardened bit was forged in to the shoulder of the tomahawk, commonly called a lap weld or lap seam. A good sign of authenticity and age. Walnut wood haft is original to the head. The brass tacks are original old square shank tacks. All along the haft are many ceremonial file branding marks made by placing a file or rasp in the fire until it was bright red and then burning the file into the haft. This was done for aesthetic “looks” and ceremonial purposes. There is a drilled hole for attaching drops or beads. The head is ever so slightly loose, the result of the wood drying and shrinking over the course of 170 years. A hide or leather gasket is seen between the eye and head. VERY NICE patina all over, really shows its age! The unusual style head is very desirable. Conservatively dated to 1780 but may be earlier. Sadly having to part with my beloved rocking-horse. Over twenty years with me. Extensive and painstaking restoration has revealed what is left of the original paintwork, with wonderful patination to the neck where years of childrens hands have rubbed. Some original leatherwork remains, but most is antiqued replacement, very sympathetically done. Most of one ear is missing, but was done such a long time ago I decided to leave it alone rather than have it cut about. Made by FH Ayres, the most sought after maker, and is without doubt one of the very first swing stand horses ever made. The horse has a lovely turn to the head. 40 inches to highest part of neck. Would be classed as a medium sized horse. Stand has replacement posts and cross-braces, the rest is original, along with the beautifully carved runner ends. Horse would have had saddle pommels, but I did not bother to replace these. Please note this is an ANTIQUE and piece of objet d’art, NOT a TOY. The photos don’t do it justice at all.
