Rare Early 20th Century Oxford University Wooden Mountaineering Expedition Crate

Rare Early 20th Century Oxford University Metal Bound Wooden Expedition Crate. The crate was originally used by Oxford University Exploration Club, mountaineering Expedition To The Andes Of Peru, and dates to around 1905 – 1910. Incredibly it survived and it still in usable condition. The crate was produced by Venesta Boxes and Barrels of a London. Venesta was founded in 1898 and the first company to import plywood. The company gained special notoriety after they supplied the crates for two historic Artic expeditions. The first was Ernest Shackletons Nimrod expedition, and second Captain Robert Falcon Scotts ill fated Terra Nova expedition. The history of this crate is very significant and its ties to both Oxford University and the company Venesta make a must for any collector. With two closing latches to both sides, and metal bound for durability. Stamped with the expedition information to the top. Stamped with the makers name to two sides. A perfect coffee table or side table and a real talking piece. We discovered a pair of these very rare boxes, the listing is for one box. 47cm wide x 37cm deep x 33cm tall. RARE LENOX SOAP EARLY 20TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE BLACK INK STAMPED SIDEWALL GRAPHIC ICONOGRAPHY, WOOD BOX ADVERTISING CRATE, with NATURAL DRY, MATTE ORIGINAL WOOD SURFACES, by PROCTOR & GAMBLE, CINCINNATI, OHIO. [Featuring Proctor & Gamble’s crescent moon hallmark]. Early 20th century Ame ri can antique wood box advertising crates & soap boxes. 8 14″ Height x 15 12″ Depth x 19 Width. For sale is this incredible and absolutely untouched, original and completely authentic, Proctor and Gamble of Cincinnati, Ohio, early 20th century vintage Lenox Soap wood crate advertising box, featuring black ink stamped sidewall graphic iconography on two long and one short sidewalls, early nailed corners and a wood plank floor. The black ink is original and still largely saturated and opaque. The wood surfaces haven’t been lacquered or varnished and have a matte, dry finish. There’s only the slightest bit of wood loss along the top right corner of one of the long wooden sidewalls. This amounts to what would be best described as a sliver of wood and not a chunk. The wood has naturally aged patina and its wood cover was pried off with a crow bar. The damage to the long sidewall most likely occurred when the wood box crate was initially opened. One long sidewall has great graphics with a hand holding a bar of Lenox soap. The short sidewall has the Proctor and Gamble crescent moon hallmark stamped on it. RARE EARLY 20TH CENTURY VINTAGE WELCH’S GRAPE JUICE WOODEN BOX CRATE, W / RED & BLACK INK STAMPED SIDEWALL GRAPHIC ICONOGRAPHY & FINGER-JOINED CORNERS, WESTFIELD, NY. American vintage early mercantile advertising. Originally Contained (24 Pints). 19″ Width x 8″ Height x 14 Depth. In simply outstanding overall antique condition, with red and ink stamped graphic iconography on all four sidewalls. It has finger-joined corners and features all wood construction and a wood plank floor. With absolutely wonderful black and red ink stamped period typography, that is still clear and crisp, this is a fabulous early 20th century advertising wood box crate, produced by the famous American food and juice company out of Westfield, New York, the Welch’s Grape Juice Company the national drink. Produced somewhere after the turn of the century, between 1900 and 1920, this is an earlier, older American wood box crate, which is a great example of early American mercantile advertising. The box crate doesn’t suffer from any real, noticeable depreciation of its ink stamped sidewall typography and it also doesn’t suffer from any depreciating stains, wood loss, corner loss, fractures, board loss, flea bites to its edges, dry or wet rot. This is simply a gorgeous box. It won”t disappoint. Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
