This rare find is very interesting.. It measures just 17 long and is very old. The heavily patinated wooden ball is attached to the iron linked chain. The leather shackle works like a belt. Not the best security system. But clearly this was used. A lot. The leather shows honest wear and age. I’m thinking this is 150 years old. I believe the photographs give an accurate read.

Rare Early 18th c. Silver Bottle Shaped Pomander with Chain. Early silver pomander, beautifully carved all over the bulbous bottom, with smooth neck decorated with carved “rings”. The scent holes are on the bottom. The cap is secured with a double rope chain. It is in great condition, with a small dent on the side of the bulb. The pomander measures just under 7 cm. High and under 3 cm. It weighs 23 grams. I don’t know the source of this piece – could be European, Persian or Middle Eastern. There are no hallmarks that I can find.

An early 19th century leather dog collar and lead with the brass plaque for “Cosher” of the Revenue Police, Dovor (sic). During the early 19th century the old spelling for Dover of “Dovor” was still in use. References to the Revenue Police in England are extremely limited with extensive research showing very little documented. There was a Revenue Police in Bristol, another port, but little documentary evidence is available. It seems as though an English Revenue Police would have assisted in the Excise at the time, although documentary evidence is sparse. An extremely rare, probably unique piece in excellent condition with the original very substantial chain. England, Dover, Kent, early 19th century.
