Up for your consideration. A Servant boy/Girl head tobacco jar – No Lid, c1920, originates from Turkey, Germany or Austria, and the rest of Europe. This ceramic tobacco jar dates to approximately the 1920s and represents a style of decorative container that was popular during the early 20th century. These anthropomorphic tobacco jars were often designed to represent various ethnic stereotypes and were produced primarily in Europe and America. Tobacco jars of this type are collected by enthusiasts of tobacciana, antique smoking accessories, and early 20th century decorative arts. While controversial by modern standards due to their often stereotypical depictions, they are valued by collectors for their historical significance as artifacts that document changing social attitudes and the material culture surrounding tobacco use in the early 20th century.
A rare pair of early 20th-century Art Deco candle holders made with one of the world’s first plastics – Galalith, a material even older than Bakelite. Galalith was invented in Germany around 1900, created from casein (milk protein) and formaldehyde, and quickly became prized for its elegant, marble-like finish and organic origin. Unlike later plastics, Galalith was not molded by heat – it was cut, turned, and polished by hand, which gives every piece its own pattern and texture. We performed several careful tests to confirm authenticity: – No reaction to Bakelite polish paste, which is expected for Galalith; – When lightly warmed, a clear scent of old soap appears – the distinctive hallmark of genuine milk-based plastic; – The surface shows fine natural flow lines and depth typical of early casein plastic; – A single green section weighs about 173 grams, consistent with the density of Galalith. These results leave no doubt: the material is authentic Galalith, produced during the early era of plastic innovation, before 1920s Bakelite manufacturing began. The bases and mounts are made of gilded metal, designed in the refined Art Deco style. Each candle holder stands approximately 17 cm tall with a base of about 11 cm in diameter. Condition: well-preserved antique condition with visible wear and gold paint loss in several areas, typical for age. No corrosion, solid structure. Pieces like this – combining Galalith with gilt metal – are extremely rare and sought after by collectors of Art Deco, early plastics, and European design history. #keywords Galalith early plastic pre-Bakelite casein plastic Art Deco candle holders 1920s rare collectible antique decor early polymer milk plastic historical plastic German material vintage brass decorative arts collectible pair Art Deco design early 20th century antique home decor European Art Deco vintage candleholders.
A stunning and rare pair of original early 20thC (1920’s) art Nouveau / Art Deco French Silvered Copper Toad Bookends on heavy solid grey marble bases. There is an engraved plaque on each stating the sculptor’s name as S. BIZARE – actually a misspell of the actual sculptor’s name Suzanne Bizard 1873 – 1973 (due to the silent “d” no doubt). Each piece is in similar age related condition with copper showing through the silver plating and age related polish and dirt created a charming original age related patina. There is Ageworn red velvet applied to the marble base. Size 12cm high x 16cm long x 10cm wide. They are both very solid and heavy – my scales only go up to 1 kilo – I imagine that these weigh approx 2 – 3 kg each. Later ceramic versions of these bookends were produced in the mid 20thC century but this pair are the original 1920’s fully cast silvered copper versions on solid marble bases and are therefore highly decorative and original – please refer to the photos thanks! A superb addition to any bookends / toad collection!
Meet Luna an adorable and rare find from the 1920’s, featuring. Antique/vintage black Cocker Spaniel Dog teddy bear made by Farnell. Farnell was a British toy company that made the first teddy bear in England in 1906. The company was founded in 1840 by John Kirby Farnell, a silk merchant in London. Materials – Black mohair throughout (good condition with some bald patches). Traditional black/clear glass eyes. Stuffed with straw throughout. Squeaker in belly which does not work. PLEASE NOTE – The Teddy Bears that I list are many years old and therefore are not suitable for children under 14 years.
