LARGE RARE & UNUSUAL, LATE 16th. BRASS NUREMBERG ALMS DISH. A superb very large, rare and unusual hand wrought brass alms dish made, I would guess, in South Germany and dates from the late 16th. To the early 17th. It is depicted as the mentioned large hand beaten dish with a relief image of what looks to be two men carrying a brasier looks to me like a giant strawberry! But was told is. In fact the spies Joshua and Caleb returning with the grapes of Caleb on poles on a domed central panel surrounded by a band of chased leaves. While its inner and outer borders are decorated with relief lozenges etc. The reverse has a later added brass suspension point- see photographs and details. It measures 17 1/4 (44cm) Dia. Approx; and is in quite good condition for an item of its age and type, although it does have some faults. As you would expect it has various very old repairs and there is wear to its surface to report – see photographs and details. This is a wonderful piece of very early European metalwork with a superb, unusual hand planished image which is in great original condition for an item of its type and age and with a realistic, yet still low, start price should get considerable interest from all collectors. I must apologise for the poor set of photographs which, try as I might, don’t display its obvious age at all well. Under photographic lights the images look almost polished, which is most definitely not the case, in fact the face surface has the patina you would expect from a piece of its age, while the reverse is almost black? Wonderful Pair of Sheet Brass Stoups. In High Baroque Manner. Both feature high-relief repousse backplates with characterful cherub’s winged heads bracketed with bold. Foliate scrolls, volutes and shells beautifully modelled in heavy-gauge brass. Supporting D-shaped reservoir trays. Despite the thickness of the metal, the high points of nose tips and hair have been polished completely. Away over time, which leads me to believe these are period and. Date to the 17th or early 18th centuries. Each has marks and blemishes consistent with great age. One is in much better condition than the other which has. A poorly soldered split to the top left-hand corner (which I’m sure could be better repaired) and a. Replacement reservoir tray which lacks the decorative raised band on the original. Nevertheless, the brass is gleaming bright and both still display well. Approximate Dimensions: Height 15cm (6″) x Width 15cm (6″). The photographs constitute part of the description. Always packed with care.
This English diminutive six light chandelier has six arms all individually numbered with punched dots to each arm showing which slots they hook into, corresponding with the dots on the central shaft. The arms are locked in place with an unusual central circular locking plate, screwed down with two hand cut threaded screws. There are some incised lines and dots as naive decoration to the whole. Quite rare to find an English chandelier of this date. It is a very nice early English chandelier and would look fabulous hung in a oak panelled study.

Very early Wrought iron stuffing spoon. Super rare early example in size and form… This piece shows being whitesmithed when it was made, with an added, never seen, splash of brass to the center. Nice punch decoration on handle. Very shallow bowl as typical of this early age. Rare early developing form. Measurements in pics, part of the description. The earliest example in the collection. In old surface, not cleaned. In the day, this was in a well to do household. Whitesmithed pieces of this era with added brass are simply unheard of. A rarity ready for your collection. No maker marks, beautiful workmanship. You can truly still feel the blacksmith’s hammer on these early pieces. These are very rare and seldom seen in this early construction form. This piece has a nice added splash of brass in the center, on top of the whitesmithing. Massachusetts acquired, outside Boston many many years ago, from my private collection. Very Early constructed example. My pieces range in age from American colonial first settlement period to roughly 1840. In the coming weeks, I will be listing many rare and hard to find pieces.
RARE 17TH CENTURY MEMENTO MORI RING. For sale is an extremely rare early English 17th Century Memento Mori silver and gold gilt ring. This is a known and extremely rare example of a 17th Memento Mori Ring, and can be accurately dated to the early 1600s. The ring still bears some small traces of its gilding on solid silver. What I love about this piece is how wonderfully illustrated the skull is, and so typical of the period, unlike anything we see today. The inscription reads (BEHOLD THE ENDE) a reminder that we all must die one day. A very rare ring, and a unique piece of history. The ring is from my own private collection, and is a ring that would look great in any museum or private collection. This ring is certainly one of the rarest of it type! And a real grail piece in any collection! Ring size measures (UK P) (US 8.5) and weighs 5.6 grams. Ring will also come with nice antique box as shown.
Magnificent Large 17th Century Japanese “Kraak” Charger which is almost 12 in diameter. This is a very early example of Japanese Porcelain Kraak wares dating between 1670 and 1690. The dish is heavily potted typical of the dishes made at this time in Arita. Densely decorated with fruit and flowers. This dish was bought from the Famous Holzapfel Ceramic Collection in 2005 by a private Swiss collector. Wonderful example and a rare find. In the late 17th Century the demand for Chinese dishes in Europe was huge and with the fall of the Ming Dynasty tin 1644 there was a shortage of supply to Europe. The Dutch turned to Japan to fill this need and so the Japanese Kilns started to produce copies of the Chinese dishes to fill the demand. The Japanese kilns however still could not produce sufficient quantities demanded of these wares as their production was on a much smaller scale than the Chinese and therefore at the time the Japanese Kraak wares were very expensive and exclusive. An incredible and decorative charger of large dish (Charger) in very good condition. Dimensions: Diameter 30cm (12 inches). Item will be extremely well packed.
