An early north country carved stone creeing trough or mortar. To Cree is to bruise wheat or barley in a large stone mortar until the husks fall off. This would then be boiled for broth or frumenty. A curiously Northern item, mortars of this size could be found in large houses and steadings the medieval period and earlier. H 36 cm // 14. W 39 cm // 15 1/4. D 39 cm // 15 1/4.
