Large table tobacco box (tabakdose), Europe (most likely Germany), early 19th century antique, Biedermeier style. The body is made of metal (probably tin), with decorative brass elements with relief embossing on the top and bottom, and hand-painted. The item depicts two’gallant’ scenes Fête galante painted by the master: a romantic couple against the backdrop of an idyllic landscape and a lady sitting in a boat accompanied by her gentleman. The painting style features a delicate pastel/ochre colour palette and meticulous attention to detail in the faces, clothing and elements of the surrounding landscape. Pastoral and gallant scenes were very popular in decorative art at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolising the refinement, romantic ideals and aesthetic moods of the Sentimentalism and early Biedermeier periods. Height 17.5 cm, diameter approx. The condition is good antique, previously used, corresponding to the age of the item (about 200 years old), with signs of natural ageing and use (scratches, scuffs on the painting, small dents and deformations). Johann (I) Stobwasser’s manufactory in Braunschweig became widely known at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries for its production of lacquered and painted decorative items. Its name is often associated with a certain style – delicate miniature painting under lacquer, soft pastel or ochre colours, as well as scenes and pastoral motifs. Stowasser and the workshops in his circle produced various items, mainly boxes and cases (including snuffboxes and tobacco jars), decorative boxes, often made of papier-mâché or lacquered metal, which were popular among the European bourgeoisie and nobility.
