SUPERB RARE VERY EARLY ARCHIBALD KNOX Des. ART NOUVEAU VASE for LIBERTY & Co. This is a stunning quite rare and very early Archibald Knox designed Art Nouveau vase for Liberty & Co that dates, I would guess, to the first year of Liberty production (very low production number – 1902 is probably a fair guestimate). It is depicted in a waisted form with relief high Art Nouveau floral motif to its rim and’whiplash’ flower heads and stems as its handles. It is stamped to the base “TUDRIC”, with “029” mark. It measures 10″ (25.5cm) H x 6″ (16.75cm) W across the handles; and is in excellent condition with no defect at all to report apart from slightr general wear consistent with its age – see photographs and details. This is a stunning piece of rare very early period Knox designed pewter from an iconic company that’s in great condition and with a realistic, yet still low start price should, I’m sure, have great appeal to all collectors. THERE IS NO RESERVE ON THIS SALE. Almost everything I sell is in the condition I have bought it, unless otherwise stated, (I have learnt to my cost in the past not to tamper with an item), and therefore I have neither had items repaired nor restored. Rare Early Florida Etching by Charles Mielatz – The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915. “The Squall, Lake Okeechobee, Florida” 1915. Etching on cream wove stock. Signed in pencil under the image : Mielatz Imp. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Annotated in pencil, by the artist at the lower edge with the title and edition information. (edition of 25 – all states / 5th State – 2nd Impression). A very fine etching by this famous master etcher depicting a storm on the Florida lake near the Everglades. Very dramatic and realistic in feeling, with an impressionist technique. Etchings by this artist usually depict New York, Midwestern and New England scenes and Southern images are rare. This early view of Florida was printed by Mielatz in a total edition of only 25. PLATE SIZE – 5″ x 7″. SHEET SIZE – 7 3/4″ x 9 7/8″. Darkening to the upper corners, well away from the image. Ready to mat and frame. Charles Frederick William Mielatz was born in Bredding, Germany in 1864. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. It was not unusual for him to have three or more states to a print in an edition run. On some he would simply reduce the plate size, on others, he would remove entire sections of the image to redraw it. He was one of the early pioneers of multi-plate color etchings in this country. Mary Cassatt’s color etchings may have influenced him. Charles Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching Club and elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1906. He succeeded James David Smillie as the etching teacher at the National Academy, a position he held for 15 years. He died in New York City on June 2, 1919. This piece will be a museum quality addition to any collection of American Art and will display beautifully in any decor: Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Americana, Southern – Florida, Eames Era, Shabby Chic, or Contemporary. This is a super sweet figure of porcelain that has the earlier ROYAL DUX of CZECHOSLOVAKIA mark. It is a porcelain figure of two parakeets. This is an original, not a later piece or a reproduction. See all photos and you can see this piece is in perfect condition! Early pink clay impressed triangle, the 1919 mark and impressed numbers. Before WW I, pink triangles were generally, but not always, left in a bisque, or unglazed, finish. Most Art Nouveau figures in matte glaze, for example, usually have bisque triangles. After WW I, Art Deco figures entirely glazed in a high gloss occasionally have glazed triangles. This figure was made in Czechoslovakia, ca. Following the end of WW I, Bohemia, the home of Royal Dux, was united with Slovakia and Moravia to form a new nation, Czechoslovakia. This change was reflected in the phrase “Made in Czechoslovakia” which appeared in Royal Dux marks around 1919 The letter E continued to be impressed in the center of the pink triangle and “Royal Dux Bohemia” impressed around the oval. This lovely piece would make a great gift for a bird lover or owner of parakeets. Very rare, you will usually find the RD Cockatoo and other birds but I have never come across another parkakeet figure. Would make a GREAT GIFT for someone who has or loves parakeets!
