Rare Antique Georgian early 18th Century Snuff Box. A fine example of an early silver, tortoiseshell and mother of Pearl. Extremely hard to find an example like this one. Very well-crafted box with silver mounted frame. The tortoiseshell has a great colour, typically of this period. As a bonus there are no engraved initials. The lid hinge works perfectly. A rare early 19th century, French Antique snuff or tobacco box. Made in France from papier mache with the top finely decorated with the scene of the judgement of Solomon on the top of the lid after an engraving by Charlin. When opened up the underside of the lid reveals an erotic scene between a nun and a monk with a further nun spectating. The colours are sepia and the main base is black lacquered. The bottom of the box is lined with a cut out caricature of Georgian style, not original to the box but a nice feature added to further enhance the special nature of this scarce box. It is circular in shape. What makes this snuff box stand out from other Erotica snuff boxes of the period is its choice of subjects and the if respective professions, making this box even more attractive and’taboo. This incredible piece is in good condition with a few tiny nibbles to the side and base. Approx measurements: 3.5″ diameter 1″ height. Very Early Antique Musical Snuff Box 2 Air C. 1820 Swiss Rare Painting Scene
This little Musical Box is one of the very early types, also used as a snuff box, from about 1820. No makers name, signs or tune names! This musical snuff box would have been carried around in the gentlemans pocket and used as form of portable entertainment! What makes this a little different is the hand painted picture in the lid, decorated with a gold border and gold frame, silver tab and hinge and a tortoiseshell case. One of the main characteristics of this being an early movement is the segmented comb, it is split in to sections rather than one long piece of steel as found on later musical boxes. It also has the teeth going from treble to bass (left to right) rather than bass to treble and the governor top is vertical rather than at an angle, two signs of it being a very early piece. Another is the detail in the music, earlier boxes have much more elaborate arrangements and a gentler tone. Please watch the videos to enjoy this almost 200 year old musical antique! An early 1800s era Regency Penwork Snuffbox, with a scene from Tam O’ Shanter, arguably Robert Burns most famous and finest piece of work. Lid fits tightly onto box, hinge has been broken along full length in antiquity. This does not detract and has a positive aspect in that both aspects of box can be displayed. Still in remarkable condition for it’s age, the penwork on the lid has great attention to detail, remember this is not a transfer. Measuring almost 9cm in length and near 5cm in width with a height of 2 cm. This lovely work of art still retains a solid robust feel. May be an early example of Mauchline Ware, but I feel it is of significantly higher quality than that. Been in my home for a lifetime.
