Absolutely beautiful and so rare to find. A fine early bird chintz quilted textile from about 1820. The front is a bird drinking from a fountain or possibly an urn or fountain surrounded by arborescent foliage and flora. There is a lovely speckled design to the ground. Lovely soft autumnal type hues of sage green and soft browns. Either English or American. Not overly glazed, soft and soft tones. The back is a madder toned cotton print which is later than the cotton chintz on the front so very possibly generational. I imagine once part of a larger counterpane. One edge is stitched under as is the bottom in tiny stitches I have tried to show in the photos. The other edge is raw. An amazing piece for the collector of rare early textiles. Displays beautifully in an early setting. Strong and stable and in fine condition for it’s age. Some age tanning to the bottom area as seen in photo #10 which to me adds lovely charisma to this charming specimen. Measures just slightly over 10″ wide by aprox 73-74″ long. I sell antique and vintage fabric. Each textile is different; some possibly used, some unused. I will give you my best assessment. I do not always launder them nor do I know all their history, how they have been stored over time etc.. I have a 30+ year long & extensive knowledge of textiles and gauge age ranges; fiber content etc.. To the best of my ability. As always please view all photos, dimensions etc.. As they are part of the description. Please keep in mind that I provide the best photos possible but monitors do vary. If my eyes should miss a small flaw, please know it is not intentional. Combined invoices are rarely accurate. Again, if you have any questions, please message me. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Linens & Textiles\Fabrics”. Extremely Rare Early Islamic Rock Crystal Chess piece c1000AD Egypt. Guaranteed Genuine around 1,000 years old Islamic rock crystal chess piece. We are delighted to offer this rare and early Islamic rock crystal deeply carved chess or gaming piece 9th-11th Century. Please note that this information in red is recent research that we have conducted on the paper collector’s label on the bottom of the wooden case that was made to store this wonderful piece. This delightful and rare rock crystal chess piece is very tactile and is beautifully carved. The deeply carved bevelled cuts have a’u’ shape and the overall appearance is very pleasing. The paper label reads. Sibthorpe is a village in Nottinghamshire with a church mentioned in the Domesday Book(completed 1086). Around 1185 Robert de Sibthorpe gave the church to the Knights Templar. It passed to the Knights Hospitallers after 1312 when the Templars were disbanded. A few years later Thomas de Sibthorpe acquired it. Parson of Beckingham, was an important man; he was a Parliamentary Clerk. A Justice of Assize as well as a Justice of the Peace and during the course of his early life he inherited, or acquired, portions of lands in Sibthorpe. In 1326 he established a chantry there and expanded this into a college chantry over the years. There is one John Thomley listed in the 1841 Census and he is registered as being in Sutton in Ashfield on the day of the Census. In England, the Census takes place every ten years and people are registered on the Census according to where they slept the night before. Interestingly Sutton in Ashfield is only twenty five miles away from Sibthorpe so it is highly likely that the John Thomley in the 1841 Census was from Sibthorpe. Furthermore, the 1841 Census documents this John Thomley are being 70 years old which is a good age in that century as the average lifespan in the 19. Century was only 40 years an improvement from 17. Century when life expectancy was only 35 years at a time when the world average life was only 29-32 years (Wikipedia). Please read the rest of the description including information about how ancient Islamic rock crystal pieces ended up in Churches, Monasteries and Cathedrals across Europe. There is a horizontal stepped cut at the base and it has been suggested that a band of gold or silver would have been around this section to differentiate the two sides in a chess game (see Al Sabah Catalogue of Early Islamic Chess and Gaming Pieces by Deborah Freeman Fahid, London 2018). Rock crystal has long been surrounded by mystery and myths with Bishops instructing crusaders to leave everything but rock crystal vessels during the medieval wars. This is how various rock crystal pieces ended up in Cathedrals throughout Europe in the Middle Ages (see Fahid, 2018). Rock crystal was thought to have magical properties such as changing colour if the liquid poured into it was poisoned. Early Islamic rock crystal artefacts in Europe include. 9 chess pieces in the Treasury of the Basilica of San Marco in Venice. One ewer in the Church of Milhaguet (near Limoges). Horizontal cylinder of Saint-Riquier. A box in the Musée de Cluny, decorated with a thirteenth-century Germanic mounting, which was once held in the Church of Moûtiers-en-Tarentaise. The Holy Thorn Reliquary in the Cathedral of Reims. Early Islamic Rock crystal chess pieces are documented in several European Churches. Rock crystal has long been surrounded by mystery and myths with Bishops instructing crusaders to leave everything behind except rock crystal vessels during the medieval wars. Chess is known as the Game of Kings as who else had the time and felt secure enough to play such an absorbing game in ancient times. Ancient chess and gaming pieces were made for the elite in society and the materials, amount of carving involved reflected this. Early Islamic chess pieces have a track record for attracting record amounts when they come up for sale. The Sotheby’s example is very similar apart from the additional design elements such as the vertical hatching which would mark it out as the’King’. This piece has been in the same private collection for several decades, safely stored in a display cabinet. It is housed in a purpose made domed wooden box that is over 200 years old with a collector’s label on the underside from the same period. The name on the label is from a collector who lived in England and who is recorded in the 1771 population census (full details on request). This piece stands just 4cm in height but is a true heavyweight among ancient chess pieces. There is some wear such as small chips around the piece as shown on the images above. This beautifully carved piece also has some minor inclusions in the crystal that can be seen from the underside. However, this piece is around 95% clear and has no internal fissures which are often found in this type of carved rock crystal. From a Private North of England Collection. France, early 1900’s, made of bronze. Height (without chain) : 11 1/4″ , total height : 22″. Good overall condition, solid bronze, rare piece : I never had one of that shape for sale, with carvings on glass, old (ceramic socket). My name is Greg, I’m a French guy who had business in Charlotte NC for 3 years. Unfortunately, I had to move back to France because of a slow activity. I fell in love with the US, particulary Charlotte! So now my only goal is to return to Charlotte, and for that I want to export French furnitures and antiques there! This idea came because of my love for wood and history. It is a great area to find valuable furnitures and smalls because of the proximity of wealthy ski resorts like Megève and Chamonix Mont-Blanc. It is also close to Geneva (switzerland), about 45minutes by car. The Geneva area is one of the richest in Europe due to finance and whatchmaking. Italy’s not to far as well, 40 minutes. So when you’re living and picking in this kind of environment, It is not rare to come across real pieces of art and history. Very Early & Rare One Piece Dial Vienna Wall Clock. Nice early and very rare one piece dial Vienna wall clock, these early examples are often referred to as’Biedermeier’. ? They were often made in Austria and not Germany and have much finer cases, which are more subtle and elegant and are certainly better constructed. The enamel dial is surrounded by a’pie crust’ cast bezel which is another early feature. The dial with nice fine hands is in very nice shape but there are a few scratches near the winding holes which are very hard to see. The movement is the lift on type, to the back plaque. The movement is clean with fine wheel work and dead beat? . The beat plaque is silvered brass which is a little faded. There is a key, weight and pendulum. The fine case looks like inlaid walnut? Which is faded in some areas (see photos) it has been in a direct sunlight. The fine crest at the top and bottom are in good condition. Early clocks like this have beautiful proportions and measures 40.5in tall (inc crest) x 11in wide x 4.75in deep. Please don’t confuse this early piece with the much inferior later German versions, this is a hard to find clock of some quality. It runs for 10-15mins then stops so would certainly benefit from a good clean and service. One side of the glass is missing on this excellent find. A nice little project that with a little work will run. Please see photos as it forms part of the description. Please note that I will only accept collection only on this item. Postal costs refer to UK mainland addresses. I do not sell reproduction items or copies, I also do not clean or restore my items but prefer to offer them in a genuinely sleepy state ready for professional restoration. I often do have items for sale that are in superb’ready to use’ condition and have many satisfied clients built up over 20 years. Please see my feedback.
