Rare Original antique icon. Eleutherius, an early Christian martyr. Size : 12×9.5 cm or 4.7×3.5 inch. Good antique condition look photos. Eleutherius, an early Christian martyr, known as the patron of prisoners. His memory is celebrated in various Christian traditions. Eleutherius was the bishop of Ilyric (now part of the Balkans), who suffered for his faith. The image of the saint is often depicted with the attributes of the bishop, as well as on the presented icon, where traditional elements of vestment and blessing are visible. The name Eleutherius means “freedom”, and therefore he was prayed by the fighters for independence during the Greek uprising and the Orthodox of the Greek Church in Albania under the oppression of communist atheism.

Stunning rare piece dating to the 1700s, with fluffy silk trees, and paper instead of silk for the face. The silk on the back is amazingly thick and soft, as is slightly visible from the back. Hand done verre eglomise, this has a wonderful folk feel about it. Has been reframed at some point as there is cardboard support. Minor flaws as shown, including some foil peeling on the black. Stunningly rare older work.
