Naked Capped Ribbon Core Early German Handmade Antique Marble Rare 17.9mm 11/16

A fantastic naked capped double ribbon core marble which terminates with a finely-crafted hand-faceted pontil, indicating that it was made during the earlier phase of swirl production between 1860 and 1880. Marbles from this era are valued for their cleanly finished appearance and quality and are very collectible. The beautiful clear glass has a thick outer layer which enhances the luscious colours and form of the core, showcasing two white-backed and blue-ribbed blades; fringed in red. Capping the design are two opposing streamers of green and red stripes against a yellow backing. With no other exterior decor, the fantastic styling is clearly visible. As with capped examples, naked ribbons like this are very desirable. Like all ribbon cores this belongs to a specialist class of marble. Exemplifying the tantalising appeal and quality of antique marbles, ribbon cores were the least commonly produced of the German handmade swirls. Made in the latter 19th and early 20th C, they required great skill to produce. They are so colourful and have a dramatic and elegant styling that gives immediate aesthetic impact when handled. Ribbon cores have only one or two ribbon-like bands of colour in the middle (unlike the much more common divided core type, which has three bands or more). These are often composed of a blade or vane with a series of coloured glass rods making distinct stripes, in an enormous variety of combinations and styles – sometimes with translucent colours, or backed with a different colour on the reverse giving the colours a vibrant radiance. Double ribbons can be symmetrical or varied. Ribbon cores often exhibit desirable features such as tornado twists; naked exteriors, capped ribbons and brilliant colours; and some have a thin core known as a razor ribbon. All antique ribbon types have a pontil indicating their age, and some are early period with beautiful faceted pontils. Rare Antique Toad Bookends Silvered Copper On Marble Bases SUZANNE BIZARD 1920’s

A stunning and rare pair of original early 20thC (1920’s) art Nouveau / Art Deco French Silvered Copper Toad Bookends on heavy solid grey marble bases. There is an engraved plaque on each stating the sculptor’s name as S. BIZARE – actually a misspell of the actual sculptor’s name Suzanne Bizard 1873 – 1973 (due to the silent “d” no doubt). Each piece is in similar age related condition with copper showing through the silver plating and age related polish and dirt created a charming original age related patina. There is Ageworn red velvet applied to the marble base. Size 12cm high x 16cm long x 10cm wide. They are both very solid and heavy – my scales only go up to 1 kilo – I imagine that these weigh approx 2 – 3 kg each. Later ceramic versions of these bookends were produced in the mid 20thC century but this pair are the original 1920’s fully cast silvered copper versions on solid marble bases and are therefore highly decorative and original – please refer to the photos thanks! A superb addition to any bookends / toad collection!

Rare&Unusual Antique, Rosso Francia Bevelled Marble Mirror 46cms x3.8cms 10lbs

This is a stunningly good looking mirror which needs very sturdy brick walls to hang it on. It is very heavy. A new build with plaster board walls would not be suitable. There is a join or crack (whatever you want to call it), as shown with finger. It is hardly noticeable because of the veins in the marble, I’m not sure if part of it’s construction as I can’t see how it could have been part of damage as it’s so neat! Parcel Force, Triple boxed. I will deliver if near Guildford. It would make a lousy jigsaw! It’s early, not a Philips screw in sight! The wooden edging could be re gilded to really lift it to another level!

Visit our shop here. An Antique German Handmade’Greiner’ Marble. Description: This very collectible and interesting early antique marble was handmade between 1850 and 1860. It has a wide opaque white swirl that leads around the marble in a long tail, giving a planetary, swirling effect of molten action. Finished with a beautifully well crafted faceted pontil, in the typical early Greiner style. Type: Greiner marbles are among the earliest type of handmade German glass marbles, from an important and formative period in the technical history of marble making – consequently these marbles are often referred to as as’transitional’ marbles. They were produced during a short period of time in Thuringia, Germany; before the cane and rod types. Greiner marbles (which were previously erroneously often known as Grenier) are highly sought after by collectors and marble historians alike. They were handmade by the Greiner family using a hand-gathered technique of swirling and forming the marble. All Greiner marbles are finished with a finely crafted single ground faceted pontil: they have beautiful, sophisticated colours, and a planetary, spontaneous abstraction of design. 82” or 13/16” inch. Rare Grenier Dark Oxblood 9 Tornado Antique German Handmade Marble Early 27/32′

An Antique German Handmade Oxblood Tornado’Grenier’ Marble. This very collectible and interesting early antique marble was hand made between 1850 and 1860. It is among the earliest type of handmade German glass marbles, from an important and formative period in history of marble making. Grenier’ marbles are consequently highly sought after by collectors and marble historians alike. They are now known as known as’transitional’ marbles due to being produced during a short period of time in Thuringa, Germany; before the cane and rod types. They were handmade by the Grenier family using a hand-gathered technique of swirling and forming the marble; in this case this has created an embryonic floating form within, surrounded by tornado-style swirl-and-tail patterns with a perfect’9′ in generous helping of very dark cochineal oxblood from tip to tail. With whiplash lines and creamy white, in a translucent, galactic base. It is finished with a finely crafted single ground faceted pontil, in the manner of all Greniers; and remains true to type with the muted, sophiticated colours, and beautiful, spontaneous abstraction of design. A real collector’s marble. Size: 21.5mm or 0.84” or 27/32” inch. Condition: In very good condition for it’s age, this marble has a chip near the pontil and a patch of pitting. The wear is all upon one side only; as can be clearly seen in the pictures and video. The slightly textured appearence is a hallmark of this type.
