This rare antique bowl was designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood as part of her celebrated early Shine series, produced between 1914 and 1929. It features a rich aqua blue mottled glaze on the outside, decorated with gilt delicate Fudogs, and a stunning interior glazed in mother-of-pearl with hand-painted mythological figures Bai-fuku (Hermit) and Waso-byo-e (Japanese Gulliver) flying on cranes and geese, all slightly different design. The design is documented in Una Des Fontaines’ 1975 reference book Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, page 83. I think this may have been one of the earliest examples produced and is slightly larger in size than the one mentioned in Una Des Fontaines. The base does not have the normal mark of the Wedgwood Portland Vase mark, as can be seen in photos but it is definitely a rare example of her work which is highly sought after. Daisy Makeig-Jones, a renowned Wedgwood designer, was known for her fantastical imagery, combining underglaze variegation, overglaze iridescence, and gilded detail. The Shine series represents her earliest experiments in lustreware and is prized among collectors of Art Deco and fairyland-themed ceramics.
