VERY RARE EARLY to MID 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN FOLK ART ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND PRIMITIVE RED & BLA C K PA I NTED PI NE WOODEN S M ALL BOX, wit h DOME D LID, E A RLY WI R E LID HI NGES & ORI G INA L FRON T L OCK AS S EMBL Y & BLACK EN A MEL P AI NTED CU T-OUT, F LAT S T OCK TIN K E Y ES C UTCH E ON in DR Y, MATT E FINISH. [Found in southern New Hampshire and most likely an early New Hampshire paint decorated pine box and not an early Maine paint decorated pine box, due to the delicate & fine nature of its paint decoration & refined features]. Early to mid 19th century New Hampshire paint decorated, early pine wooden boxes, trunks & other decorative wooden accessories. 13 1/4″ Width x 8 1/4″ Depth x 6 Height. Estate fresh and in simply extraordinary condition. Early New England, antique hand decorated, painted wooden pine boxes don’t come much better than this. Estate fresh, 100%, absolutely untouched and as it was when it was discovered in the early post and beam southern New Hampshire estate it was removed from. According to family sources, this and many of the other antique items found in the same home, were there for as long as any of the descendants could remember. The pine box features old ox blood, chalky red painted exterior finish, featuring combed, squiggly charcoal black decorated, repeating motif, with original rear, early wire lid hinges and original front lock assembly, with black enamel painted cut, flat stock tin key escutcheon. A simply extraordinary early New England primitive painted artifact in just gorgeous paint. Most likely made in New Hampshire between 1825 to 1850. Probably a New Hampshire hand decorated, painted early pine box and not a Maine one, due to the delicate, dainty quality of the paint decoration and refined form of the diminutive box. Very Good to Excellent overall antique condition. Only the left interior pine wooden lid slat’hold’ was snapped off at its mid-section at some previous juncture in time. Nothing has been done to the box to remedy this isolated damage to the box, which is now anywhere from 175 to nearly 200 years old. A truly exceptional, extraordinary New England primitive and early Ame ri can antique. Perhaps for those who truly understand the distinct and clear difference between a Datsun and a Lexus or between a Volkswagon and a Porsche, if you prefer the Ger ma ny analogy over the Jap an ese one. A New Mapp of the Roads of England, Shewing the reputed distances from one town to another. A page from the 1695 First Edition of Herman Moll’s “Thesaurus Geographicus” – page 8 to be precise. The map shows the main roads leading from London to the far corners of the Country – Edinburgh, Plymouth, Anglesey, Carlisle, etc. In an attempt to fit in all the names and distances, the shape of the Coast has been sacrificed, leading to a rather contorted map. The distances are not entirely accurate: London to Canterbury is estimated at 43 miles (in reality it is over 60) – and this would be a well-worn route. But the first road atlas of England had only been published some 20 years earlier, by Ogilby (titled “Britannia”), and many maps did not bother to show more than a few vague routes. So a fascinating early attempt to illustrate the main network of roads in England and Wales. One is reminded of Beck and his Underground map of some 230 years later which also sacrifices visual accuracy and scale for ease of use and design. Size: the sheet measures approx. 30.5cms x 20cms. Condition: Printed on two sheets of paper, joined passing through London. The page is grubby, but acceptable. There are small pieces missing here and there at the edges, those on the top right hand side entering the margin border. Please study the photos. Pencil title below the map and platemark. I have other antique maps, books, prints etc. The item “1695 Moll Early Road Map England Wales Old Antique Map Extraordinary Shape RARE” is in sale since Sunday, September 3, 2017.
