Rare Antique Pocket Diptych Sundial & Compass, D Beringer For American Mkt C1800
Rare German wooden diptych sundial with an integrated compass, likely crafted by David Beringer in the late 18th to early 19th century. Many of his pieces were made for travelers who would need to use the sundial at different latitudes. This particular piece is unique in that all of the latitudes and cities listed are in North America. Most examples in museums and available for sale were made for use in Europe. This rectangular wooden diptych sundial consists of two pieces of boxwood joined with two metal pin hinges and two hook fasteners. A hook at the back holds the instrument open (at something less than 90 degrees) and one at the front holds it closed. Printed, hand-colored paper dials are pasted onto the inner surfaces with black ink colored with red, green, and yellow. On the front is a latitude table for 15 American cities from Annapolis to Williamsburg, and 3 Canadian cities, Halifax, Montreal and Quebec. On the inside reverse are holes for latitudes of 39, 36, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, snd 54 degrees. It also features a horizontal compass in the base. Beringer was one of the first compass makers to create out of wood and printed paper instead of ivory or other precious metals. This made his wares more affordable. His workshop flourished between about 1777 and his death in 1821, and his name became synonymous with portable, wooden diptych and cube sundials. The box measures approximately 2.5 inches by 1.5 inch and. The front top panel listing cities is slightly worn, affecting two of the listed cord as visible from photos. The bottom reverse panel has remnants of a name in ink, likely a former owner. Because they are old, they were used and will not look new or new-like. They likely show wear, fading, scratches, chips, cracks, past repair/restoration, original imperfections and/or damage from normal use. Significant issues are shown in photos. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing.

Rare Sundial Portable c1680 by Chapotot Paris Early Butterfield Type Compass
Exceptionally rare portable sundial c1680 by Louis Chapotot Paris of the Butterfield type with fully engraved compass. A near perfect example brass sundial made by the well known firm of Chapotot of Paris, of quality surely surpassing Butterfield itself. An important and fashionable tool for travelers to regularly set their early watches, which were less accurate. Features a hinged, adjustable bird-shaped gnomon, a recessed compass, and an octagonal plate engraved with multiple hour scales for different latitudes. The octagonal plate measures 64 cm L x 57 cm W x 8.9 cm. The compass card is marked with the cardinal points, N, S, ES and OU. The outer band is in Roman numerals, I through XII and the two inner bands are in Arabic numerals 1 through 12. The folding adjustable gnomon is in the form of a bird with a scale of 40, 50 and 60 degrees of the sun’s altitude on its edge. Inside the three bands it is signed with the maker’s name, CHAPOTOT A PARIS. On the reverse are twenty cities, each with their altitude including the important Londres, plus Paris, Marseille, Amsterdam, Vienne, Rome, Turin, Naples… See images which form part of the description. The compass card bowl has a superbly engraved floral rosette design. There is a support leg at the bottom end to balance the dial when laid on a flat surface. Complete with blue shagrine leather case velvet lined. Downsizing collection and a very reluctant sale. Investment potential and one for the true horological connoiser.

RARE Early Antique J. BLATTNER, ST. LOUIS, MO. Brass Surveyor's Vernier Compass
Here we have a RARE Early Antique J. Brass Surveyor’s Vernier Compass. Jacob Blattner was born in Berne, Switzerland. Was thoroughly trained in the art of manufacturing precision instruments. In 1839, Jacob and his wife, along with his foreman and his foremans family immigrated to the United States. Blattner opened a shop at 24 Chestnut. 1840 as a mathematical instrument maker. His shop manufactured all types of mathematical, scientific and optical instruments. Offered a large range of surveyors compasses. His sole-proprietorship lasted until his retirement in 1871. The successor to Jacob Blattners operation of 30 years was the company, Blattner & Adam. The principals were Henry Blattner, Jacob’s son, and Frank Adam, Jacob’s son-in-law. This surveyors vernier compass has a silvered brass compass dial that is inscribed: J. The dial face is divided in eight sections with directional designations and a very nice large. The compass has an elevated dial edge with 360 degree graduation around perimeter. There is a finely sculpted steel needle. The bottom mounted needle lift/lock is missing its thumbscrew. There is a vernier adjustment knob which operates gears to revolve the compass, and a locking knob below the compass case. There is a tiny bit of damage on the edge of the vernier plate with an edge folding up. This doesn’t affect the function. See pics The top of the main frame is also outfitted with two upright sighting vanes. The vanes have slit, peep hole sights and can be removed for ease of transport. The bottom of the compass has a tripod attachment collar. Instrument is 16-1/2″ Long with 7-1/2″ tall vanes and a 6-1/4 diameter compass. This instrument has a very nice aged patina finish!! This is decent example of one of the St. Louis surveyor, scientific instrument makers that deserves a place in your collection. Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. The item “RARE Early Antique J. BLATTNER, ST. LOUIS, MO. Brass Surveyor’s Vernier Compass” is in sale since Saturday, July 17, 2021.
