Early-Mid 1800’s Large American Tiger Maple Candle Storage Box, Rare

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous American hand made early-mid 1800’s tiger maple candle storage box. The body of the box is made of 3/4 thick, solid tiger maple wood with rich, mellow coloration and prominent graining. The box is a larger size than normally found and has a dovetailed construction with wide bordered chamfered sliding top with locking mechanism. The key hole has a brass edge and we do have a working key which may or may not be original to the box. The wide dovetails are set far apart which is generally a sign of older construction. Candle boxes are generally rectangular boxes with tight fitting sliding lids and were generally made from less expensive woods as they were made to be utilitarian storage boxes used to protect candles from rodents. This box was definitely made by a very talented wood worker possibly as a gift for a special person due to its construction details and use of a more desirable wood than normally used. Measures 15″ long, 8″ wide and 6 deep. Weighs 6.3 pounds. This unusual tiger maple box is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws reflecting only minor signs of normal wear. AN EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE AND EXTREMELY RARE 18th CENTURY OLD ORIGINAL EARLY LIGHTING WROUGHT IRON CANDLE HOLDER STAND WITH BURL WOOD BASE. Virtually a one of a kind out of a high end private collection in all original untouched condition. Measures 25 1/4” in height by an approximate 8 3/4” diameter bottom base. Its attributes are a double cup candle holder on a round drip pan forking down to a single shaft having an early center twist. The stem goes into an exquisite burl wood platform base with three rose head nail underneath feet. The authentic rustic primitive character to this is just outstanding and second to none. Early lighting examples like this one are rarely ever seen or offered and i dont believe you will find one quite like this extraordinary piece. Rare Brass Capstan Candle Stick c1550 Early Tudor Elizabethan 16th 17th

A Rare Original Brass Capstan Candlestick/holder Dating to c1550. Capstan form with polygonal socket with conforming integral moulding. Probably flemish or dutch in origin. Double extraction holes, round-over-large rectangle, one has pierced through with use. The nozzle on a conicalflange above medial dished drip-pan on a spreading conical base on a steppedfoot. Dim: 8.5 cm high 8.4 cm base diameter A rare form of thisperiod, the hexagonal candle socket featureis the rarer form and an attractive feature more costly to make thanthe more typical round stem found. This is also the rarer small size at 3.5 inches, most being 4.5 and possibly made for travelling. Imagine what its seen! PAIR RARE LATE 18th-EARLY 19th C. PIETRA DURA HARD STONE / MARBLE CANDLE HOLDERS

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a very unusual pair of antique English Pietra Dura hard stone inlaid on marble candle holders. These unusual candle holders are made of black marble and feature the front panel with Pietra Dura hard stone decoration with beautiful coloration in the stones. Measure 10″ tall with the candle opening being 1″ in diameter and a base diameter of 4 square. Weight is 6.0 pounds. These gorgeous candlesticks have some minor nicks in the marble as expected with functional items of this age. The flaws are minor no-harm nicks around the bottom edge on corners and one candlestick has a small chip on the upper rim (see photos). The Pietra Dura inserts are in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. No other noted flaws. Felt cover on bases as found. This is certainly a UK piece made in Ashford Derbyshire during the 18/19th centuries. Similar pieces/styles in Chatsworth House, Derbyshire and go under the name Ashford Marble. Give away is the limestone coral inlay which is shown on the side of the piece – Italians so never had this sort of coral limestone. In Derbyshire it is very common and was turned into all sorts of architectural/monastic columns/items. The product is quite rare. Easy to check – Ashford marble is a natural bitumen filled marble (mined locally in Ashford under water) which takes a high polish when cut and burns when heated.
