Antique Rare c1790 Georgian Derby Ikat Wiggle. Band Teacup Saucer Gilt Foliate Rim. An exceptionally rare and visually striking late Georgian Derby porcelain teacup and saucer dating to circa 1790, decorated in a remarkably modern geometric band pattern enriched with finely painted gilt foliate borders. Elegant, experimental and surprisingly contemporary in appearance, the service stands as a fascinating example of the bold decorative innovation emerging within the finest English porcelain factories during the closing decades of the 18th century. While floral decoration and repeating patterned borders dominated fashionable Georgian tea wares of the period, this example displays an unusually abstract interpretation of those prevailing tastes. Rather than employing conventional sprigging or dense botanical reserves, the decorator has created a vibrant rhythmic border composed of rapidly brushed multicoloured dash motifs in vivid cobalt blue, emerald green, iron red and soft puce tones. The effect is almost kinetic in appearance, producing a striking sense of movement around the otherwise restrained white ground. What makes the pattern especially compelling is how unexpectedly modern it feels for the 1790 period. The repeated geometric brushwork possesses an almost proto-Regency or even early modernist aesthetic, recalling textile ikat patterns or abstract painted ornament more commonly associated with much later decorative movements. Yet despite this visual boldness, the overall composition remains refined and balanced within the elegant neoclassical sensibilities of late Georgian Derby porcelain. The interior is further enriched with delicate hand-painted blue dot garlands and a lavishly tooled gilt foliate rim executed to an exceptionally high standard. The fine gilding beautifully frames the vivid geometric decoration while adding the luxurious brilliance expected of quality Derby wares intended for elite fashionable tea tables. The cup itself is beautifully potted with thin translucent walls, a refined footrim and an elegant loop handle characteristic of the finest Derby production of the late 18th century. The underside retains the puce Derby factory mark beneath a crown and crossed batons together with painted pattern number “77”, fully consistent with the factory’s period output before the formal later “Royal Derby” designation. Examples of Derby porcelain featuring such unusual abstract geometric ornament are genuinely scarce today, particularly surviving as matching cup and saucer combinations. The rarity of the pattern, combined with its unexpectedly forward-looking visual character, makes this an especially appealing piece both for collectors of early English porcelain and for those drawn to historically important decorative design.
