This rare find is only one of maybe a half dozen I have seen over the years. It is in amazing condition and fully functional. The cast brass bell is marked “10” and looks like a miniature early church bell. It retains its original cast lead & iron ringer and has a very pleasing ring. The bell is attached to the forged iron hanger with a forged eye-bolt, and the hanger extends vertically and terminates in a wonderful spiral spring which could then be hammered into place with the attached large forged spike. Presumably, the spike would be hammered into a beam or trim near the door such that the movement of the door rings the bell by way of a cord attached to the door and to the eye-bolt on the bell. Or, someone wishing to enter would pull on a cord which would go through the trim from the outside and ring the bell more like a regular entrance bell or doorbell. This piece was probably made in the Northeast between 1800 and 1850. It would be suitable for an important architectural restoration. Dimensions: Bell & Hanger: 8-1/2″ tall, Attachment Spike: 5-1/4″ long, Spring: 1-3/16 wide, Bell: 3″ tall, 3-3/16″ max. All parts are intact with no structural damage, cracks, losses or repairs. Overall original patina is undisturbed.

Step back in time with this charming early 20th-century oil painting by renowned British artist James Bell Anderson. This exquisite piece captures the historic West Gate of Canterbury, England, in Anderson’s signature atmospheric style. Title: “West Gate, Canterbury”. Medium: Oil on canvas. Size: 6″ by 8″ without frame, 12″ by 14″ with frame. This painting is in good vintage condition, consistent with its age and history. Here are the details. The board is intact with no tears or holes. The paint layer is stable with no significant flaking or loss. There is some minor craquelure (fine cracks in the paint), typical for oil paintings of this age. The colors are DARKER than they appear on the photographs. I was unable to take a photo which adequately shows the color. The frame is original and in good condition with some wear on the corners and edges. There are a few small spots and minor surface dirt, which add to its authentic vintage character. No signs of restoration or overpainting are visible. Overall, this painting has been well-preserved and displays beautifully, with its age-related imperfections adding to its charm and historical value. The painting beautifully depicts the medieval West Gate of Canterbury, with its imposing twin towers dominating the scene. Anderson’s skillful use of light and shadow brings the historic streetscape to life, showcasing quaint shops, period-dressed figures, and the bustling atmosphere of early 20th-century Canterbury. Born in Scotland, Anderson was known for his atmospheric depictions of British towns and landmarks. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. Anderson’s works are prized for their historical value and artistic merit, offering a glimpse into the charm of pre-war Britain. This painting would make an excellent addition to any collection of British art or architectural studies. It’s a perfect conversation piece for history enthusiasts and anglophiles alike. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a piece of British artistic heritage. Add this James Bell Anderson original to your collection today! Early 19th Century Antique Brass Bell Weight 4LB – Very rare. Probably dates from around 1820. In beautiful used condition. Stamp mark on the top is for. Parnall & Sons of Narrow Wine St, Bristol. The Parnall Family branched out from St Austell in Cornwall to all parts of Cornwall, particularly St Gennys on the north coast, while William Parnall (the founder of Parnall and Sons Ltd) journeyed to Bristol to start a weights and measures business. Around 1820, that business started to expand, as it became more successful, extending the range of services to include cabinet making and shop fitting. Carpentry was at its heart. By 1880, Parnall & Sons Limited. Was one of the largest shop fitting companies in England with over 10,000 people employed all across the country. They had multiple premises in and around Bristol including Fishponds, Narrow Wine Street and Fairfax Street as well as branches in London and Swansea. William Parnall’s son, John Parnall, who is great grandfather to Mark Parnall, Founder of Parnall Group Ltd, expanded the business further and merged it with WT Avery. Another well-known weights and measures brand. The company later demerged but by 1913 the world had turned its attention to War and the pressure on the businesses to contribute to the war effort evolved. Wonderfully tactile object with a weight of history behind it. Loading...X
