RARE 1930s/ 40s ERA ANTIQUE NAVAJO CORN KACHINA w/ STAND NATIVE AMERICAN. This is a very rare find. This is an antique Navajo kachina hand-carved out of a cottonwood representing one of the Corn Kachina. This kachina has been dated to around the 1930s/ early 40s by Mark Bahti of Bahti Indian Arts of Tucson and Santa Fe, paperwork will be included. The paperwork from Mark Bahti constitutes a professional analysis of the kachina, tribe and materials. This rare kachina falls into the Navajo folk art category. That being said, it is an incredible piece. This antique Native American, Corn kachina stands approximately 9-1/2″ tall in the stand, approximately 9-1/4″ tall out of the stand, approximately 4″ wide across the body and approximately 3″ deep including the nose. The body area is approximately 1-1/2 deep. One of the hands is missing and one of the feet has been glued back together, please see photos. Bahti feels this kachina was painted with one of the original type of poster paints and that the green paint is a type of mineral paint. The ruff was constructed out of a very old washcloth, cotton yarn for the belt that appears to be homespun. He did not state what he thought the skirt material was. There are very old feathers inserted into the top of the head for hair, most of which have rubbed away or broken off over the years. This kachina has a few stains, some splits in the wood, scratches and some rub to it, but in spite of that, it is in remarkably good condition for a kachina that is nearly 100 years old. It was originally designed to be hung by the neck as traditional Hopi kachinas are, but I have included a stand for your convenience. It can be displayed either way. This unique kachina was carved out of cottonwood This rare kachina would be an outstanding addition to any Western or Native American collection! Very rare Schuco Donald Duck Figure. Early pre-WW2 Schuco production. Featuring a Donald Duck style duck figure. Made of tin hand painted in beige, green and orange to beak. He is wearing a felt jacket and carries a cane and a backpack. Also a piece of felt as tail. He is about 5 3/4 inches tall. Wind up mechanism makes him waddle, open and close his beak, and produce a squeaking sound thanks to a bellow inside his beak. This type of early Schuco ducks are very rare, but this combination of green paint with green jacket and walking stick is super rare. Original paint with no touchups. Felt clothes are in very good condition with no damage. Clockwork mechanism works and he squeaks no problem. He is missing a small round hat. Dates to right about 1931 to 1932, with a real early Deco silhouette that looks different from every angle. Supple and buttery black French felt with a velour finish, drapes around the face like a halo from the front, with drooping folding sides reminiscent of the late 1920s cloches. Black silk ribbon around the crown. Perfect as ti is, Lilly has added only a carved bright butterscotch bakelite leaf brooch/clip which can be moved to any position that suits the fancy. Early hats from Dache’ are extremely rare, most museums do not even have one. Sits on the back of the head and fits most lady’s heads, very comfy to wear. The Katsinas from Rio Grande Pueblo (from now New Mexico) are much rarer than Hopi Katsinas although stylistically they are similar. They Rio Grande Pueblo Katsinas are usually made of pine wood, versus cottonwood by the Hopi. Age 1920’st to early 1930’s. Condition: Please refer to pictures, stable crack along body of Kachina, one of the arms was reattached, some paint loss commensurate with age. The turquoise color was once more deep blue and age turns it turquoise, one of the great signs of an authentic older katsina. Katsina primarily refers to the supernatural beings who are believed to visit Hopi and other Pueblo villagers during half of the year. Katsinas have the power to bring rain, exercise control over the weather, help in many of the everyday activities of the villagers, punish offenders of ceremonial or social laws, and, in general, to function as messengers between the spiritual domain and mortals.
