Rare Early Florida Etching by Charles Mielatz – The Squall, Lake Okeechobee 1915. “The Squall, Lake Okeechobee, Florida” 1915. Etching on cream wove stock. Signed in pencil under the image : Mielatz Imp. Signed and dated in the plate, lower right. Annotated in pencil, by the artist at the lower edge with the title and edition information. (edition of 25 – all states / 5th State – 2nd Impression). A very fine etching by this famous master etcher depicting a storm on the Florida lake near the Everglades. Very dramatic and realistic in feeling, with an impressionist technique. Etchings by this artist usually depict New York, Midwestern and New England scenes and Southern images are rare. This early view of Florida was printed by Mielatz in a total edition of only 25. PLATE SIZE – 5″ x 7″. SHEET SIZE – 7 3/4″ x 9 7/8″. Darkening to the upper corners, well away from the image. Ready to mat and frame. Charles Frederick William Mielatz was born in Bredding, Germany in 1864. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and studied at the Chicago School of Design. Mostly self-taught, his first prints were large New England landscapes reminiscent of the painter-etcher school of American Art. Around 1890 he started to produce prints of New York City and by the time of his death, the number totaled over ninety images. He was a master technician in the field of etching, reworking many of his plates to get the exact feeling he was seeking. It was not unusual for him to have three or more states to a print in an edition run. On some he would simply reduce the plate size, on others, he would remove entire sections of the image to redraw it. He was one of the early pioneers of multi-plate color etchings in this country. Mary Cassatt’s color etchings may have influenced him. Charles Mielatz was a member of the New York Etching Club and elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1906. He succeeded James David Smillie as the etching teacher at the National Academy, a position he held for 15 years. He died in New York City on June 2, 1919. Armin Heying was born in Missouri and worked on the railroad there. In the 1920s he moved to Anaheim, California. He was an accomplished painter, apparently self-taught, and always worked other jobs. His painting was done on the side. As he got older, he began giving art lessons. On the Orange County historical blogspot, a neighbor remembers him fondly, living on South Claudina Street in Anaheim, and painting in a studio behind his garage. An old newspaper article from 1957 describes how he donated 2 paintings to the Presbyterian Church on Broadway. The titles were “Gethsemane” and Resurrection. According to the 1940 Census, Heying was working as a superintendent at the Mutual. He died in 1972. This item is in the category “Art\Paintings”.
