Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous American hand made early-mid 1800’s tiger maple candle storage box. The body of the box is made of 3/4 thick, solid tiger maple wood with rich, mellow coloration and prominent graining. The box is a larger size than normally found and has a dovetailed construction with wide bordered chamfered sliding top with locking mechanism. The key hole has a brass edge and we do have a working key which may or may not be original to the box. The wide dovetails are set far apart which is generally a sign of older construction. Candle boxes are generally rectangular boxes with tight fitting sliding lids and were generally made from less expensive woods as they were made to be utilitarian storage boxes used to protect candles from rodents. This box was definitely made by a very talented wood worker possibly as a gift for a special person due to its construction details and use of a more desirable wood than normally used. Measures 15″ long, 8″ wide and 6 deep. Weighs 6.3 pounds. This unusual tiger maple box is in excellent Estate condition with no noted flaws reflecting only minor signs of normal wear. She has no damage to her very pale bisque shoulderhead or her delicately sculpted hands and fingers. Her eyes are absolutely stunning- they remind me of the paperweight eyes seen on French dolls of the same time period. Her body is leaking saw dust and is fragile so her new owner may want to make repairs. Her lovely antique dress fits her perfectly and covers much newer undergarments.
