Rare pair of early 19th century French window or hall seats
Rare pair of early 19th century French window or hall seats. You are looking at a pair of very unusual early to mid 19th Century French window or hall seats. They are all original with a dark brown almost black varnish with lovey patina and wear. They have the most beautiful rococo legs at the front , with big chunky turned legs at the back. The seats have a rebate for the cushions. The side arms have turned slates and roundle finishes. Ther is a very small piece of edging missing at the back corner, (please see photo) We do have the original cushions , which we have saved to give an idea of the original style (they are straw filled and very tatty) the seats are mirror image so you have a left and right. Overall length including the back 62 (157cm) seat length 57 (146cm) overall width 13 (33cm) total height 29 (74cm) sear height 14 (35cm). He is most definitely well to do wearing his beautifully detailed finery. We call this panel. “GENT SMOKING A CLAY PIPE”. Condition is EXCELLENT, which is remarkable when one considers its age of 400 years. It will be very well packed. About the deveopments and styles of pipes. By the early part of the 17th century, the clay tobacco pipe industry began to develop in many local centres throughout Britain and in many parts of the Netherlands. These early pipes typically had a short stem with a large bore diameter and a small “acorn” shaped, rouletted bowl that angled away from the smoker. Very rare original 16th century Swiss stained glass window (not a later 19th century recreation). These silver stained glass lead-light windows often celebrated a wedding and this particular window displays family arms and text caption below in German pertaining to family name’the house of… And dated above and below 1517- incidentally the start of Martin Luther’s Protestant Reformation that year. Excellent original colours that look magnificent in the light. In the photos the panel is angled against a white wall with a small amount of light illuminating from the back. Note, when flat against a wall the panel looks less lively as shown in last photo. Originally would have most likely been inset into a larger plain roundel type window in the family’s home as a centrepiece from what I understand. Measures 485mm x 370mm. Condition is outstanding for age and the lead appears to be original as are all the stained glass panels, there is only one very fine hairline crack to corner of one panel as can be seen in photo 4; part from that I really cannot fault this window. Difficult to find anywhere in the world of this age, quality and condition… Really belongs in a museum!
