Lock stitch two thread sewing machine, very rare walnut unfolding table with 3 drawers cabinet, cast iron treadle & stand. The Grover & Baker G. B Sewing machines Company of Boston. MA was one of the original members of Sewing Machine Combination established by 2 boston tailors William O. And the first G&Bs President Orlando B. Potter has the distinction of forming the first Trust in US history: The four. Companies : Grover & Baker Co, Wheeler & Wilson Co, I. Elias Howe Companies also formed 1st in US history Patent pool. In order to prevent themselves from litigations and, of course, to control the sewing machine market. All these companies have contributed into the that pool the best innovative ideas they had. B lock stitch sewing machine Model 9 is one of the first machines has been ever made. Grover and Baker patented their fist idea on May 6 1849 and. Baker SMC has been established. It is the antique sewing machines renown expert’s opinions that the. Higher value generated by all G & B machines is associated due to their unique. Being offered for sale today is Lock stitch # 9 model patented in October 1859. The needle for this machine has been patented (US Patent # 34571) in 1862. This is Famous Silver plated Model # 9, Serial # 420839. The sliding plates and body of the machine head also carry the numerical marks – # 146839. He earlier versions of these machines has been made starting from 1855 till middle 1870. These machines has been hand made with great precision. Even today , 150 years later, all parts in the machines moving mechanisms are perfectly synchronized and functions within themselves as the new ones. Some of the models for G&B SMC in the beginning has been silver plated by Domestic SMC in Buffalo NY and later they gradually began making the parts and a few years later to completely assemble machines for Grover. Even at that time consumers has been forced not to care how beautiful and gracefully curved like a swans those G & B machines are – the production cost and sale price has been deciding factor. Unfortunately today the major goal of our society is the constant pursue of lower cost and most of us have the unfortunate tendency to overlook or simply brush off such aspects as quality and aesthetics. So, let the truly exquisite appearance of this machine serve to us as a reminder of those unfortunately bygone era. All together Grover & Baker SMC for 22 years of existence has produced only. In the middle of 1860. Singer would do an unpredictable simply put all acquired perfectly functioning G&B machines under the press!!! The hundreds of thousand machines has been destroyed! How many has survived after these 150 years? And how many in great mechanical and cosmetic conditions? I bet much less than a one hundred! To make it short those a few surviving up to present time machines are indeed extremely rare! Singer , Wheeler & Wilson, Howe SMC has produced a tens of millions machines and G&B SMC only a relatively few and that is the one of the reasons why serious collectors always ready to pay a premium price for the honor to have one in their collection. Over these years I have had 14! Almost all of 14 machines were not in the functioning but most of the time being completely frozen and some in very bad cosmetic condition. But over these 45+ years it was my true mission to return those rare truly Our American Heritage mechanical beauties to life. Please look at all these pictures attached – For being 148 years old this machine is absolutely beautiful! The machine has been completely taken apart , cleaned , adjusted and now turns and function correct and freely. Please note from the pics provided, that the most of gold painted motifs on the machines body and on cast iron stand did not survived, but could be visible at close observation only as the shadow and I have made the attempt to highlight those hardly visible shadow in order to bring it as close as possible to the original state. The cabinet’s drop leaf with swing support of extended table and beautiful 3 drawers rack has been taken apart , all bronze hinges has been removed cleaned and polished, all original screws has been polished. Each panel and all made out of solid black walnut wood table and base and drawers has been meticulously cleaned to remove oxidation and accumulation of dirt. I have hydrated wood parts with a lot of linseed oil to restore distressed wood and to reveal beautiful wood grain. Just look at the gorgeous selected grain wood panels – I think that the enjoyment a future owner would be happy to experience for the long period of time is justification for the huge amount of time and effort that has been spent on the restoration process. After completion of that extremely laborious process I have sealed the outer surfaces with mixture of polyurethane and oil to preserve the beauty of the wood grain and to prevent further moisture absorption, wood expansion and oxidation. S I have mentioned above , the most of the gold decorations on the machine’s body did not survived and I had to replace them. Those new decoration has been meticulously professionally re-created based on the original pattern that has been seen as a shadow. The oblong portrait of woman in the middle of the machines bed was also in the bad condition , so I have ordered the new decal of the same size and image to be. Made to replace the original one. The machine is sewing perfectly – see pic # 1 how the tremendous punching through power of this machine can effortlessly go through 4 layers of heavy laminated vinyl! Once The Harper’s Monthly Magazine in August 1861 has made the statement about G&B… Does not fail to excite your admiration for the beauty and uniformity. Is surely holds the truth even more now than 159 years ago. American Heritage functioning piece like this one does not present. And I still would continue to keep all of them and enjoy. This rare beauty, but residing in S. Florida where the living space. To reduce the small remnants of my collection to no more than 5 machines. So, after some considerations I have decided to offer this collectors item for sale. I can offer the number of options to package this machine and It would depends on the new destination location. Completely take it apart : remove the machine from the table, treadle wheel and iron stand from the cabinet and to pack it together with cover in one carton with a lot of impact absorption media. The table after drop leaf and drawers rack would be removed , is not big -37x18x4”. The folded treadle is 30 x14 x14, cover – 18x13x10, head is relatively small and will fit with proper impact absorbing insulation into separate carton of 18x12x10. You know very well that any lateral impact could do the damage to the cast iron even if the wood wall would be build on the 4 sides, especially considering that the center or gravity would be high. 1 Grover & baker sewing machine , 1870. 1 G & B Black Walnut solid wood table with drop leaf and support bracket. 1 Grover & Baker walnut rack with 3 large drawers with locks and 1 key. 1 G & B Bonnet cover with 2 bronze handles , lock and 1 key. 2 G & B Cast iron treadle legs. 1 G & B pedal assembly with wood Pittman rod. 3- G & B needles. 1- 70+ pages US Patents with 32 pages of drawings , printed and also could be forwarded in PDF. Rare Early Walnut and Marquetry Scriptor Escritoire c. 1715
Rare Early Walnut and Marquetry Scriptor Escritoire c. A very rare walnut scriptor of small proportions and with a most attractive figuring and colour. The scriptor has beautiful and original marquetry inlays to the fall and interior door and the fall and each of the drawers have double featherbanded borders. The side panels have deep crossbanded borders. These were costly additions at the time this scriptor was made in c. Each design was created by a skilled craftsman who would cut and inlay the thousands of tiny shards of exotic woods by hand. The lower case with two over two graduated drawers, each drawer retains its original full oak lining and is in solid and robust condition. The drawers all open and close smoothly. Original bracket feet, and original backboards and top boards. Good quality ogee waist and cornice mouldings and a concealed cushion fronted drawer just below the cornice, again with its original full oak lining. Some old shrinkage and restoration to the exterior face of the fall, stable and not going anywhere and shown in our photos. A few old and dead worm holes here and there. Dings, dents and marks consistent with 300 years of careful use. Some small repairs and restorations but nothing unpleasant or noticeable, brass handles are late 18th century period replacements and have attractive colour and wear. These minor faults reflected in our very reasonable price and entirely normal for antique cabinets of this great age. The outer face of the fall with flowing foliate marquetry in sycamore, burr oak, satinwood, yew wood and maple. The inner face of the fall is inset with a high quality oxblood hide and opens and closes very smoothly, resting firm and flat on the on original hand-forged iron hinges and with an early working key. Lots of space inside for laptops and paperwork. The fine inner drawers have small brass button handles and these also retain their full oak linings with tiny dovetailed joints. The small drawers open and close smoothly and are robust and usable. The central door is beautifully inlaid with satinwood, oak, harewood, maple and ebony in a complex geometric pattern with moulded borders strung with satinwood. Of small proportions, this beautiful piece of early walnut furniture will light up any room and is entirely practical for use in todays wireless world, having space for a laptop in the central well and a strong and flat writing surface at a height which will work with a standard desk chair. Strongly recommended, a really rare and beautiful early 18th Century marquetry scriptor. Dimensions are: 41.5 inches wide (max), 21 inches deep (max) and 66 inches high. Height from floor to fall when lowered is 31.5 inches and the depth of the scriptor when the fall is lowered is 45 inches. For metric please multiply by 2.5. There are around 50-100 high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. A very decorative and well made piece, the burr walnut veneer looks good enough to eat from every angle, if luscious timber patina is your thing then look no further as this table has it in spades. The table has a lift top, the underside of the lid shows you just how rich the colour could be if you had this piece fully restored to include a French polish, personally I like the slightly duller colour, its shows the honesty of age. As mentioned you have lovely fretwork carved lids inside, ideally suited for cards and general nick knacks relating to games. The table has very high end inlaid detailing, the skill and craftsmanship required is absolutely mind blowing. The legs are carved to the top in the traditional English manor. The condition is period so has some normal scratches and marks here and there, theres nothing serious to note other than some raised sections to the veneer here and there and general little cracks. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. This item is available for collection from our Wimbledon warehouses SW19-3BE, we can have it delivered nationwide to include Scotland Wales and Ireland. Please view the very detailed pictures as they form part of the description around condition. Please note vintage period and original items such as leather seating will always have natural patina in the form of cracking creasing and wear, we recommend regular waxing to ensure no moisture is lost, also hand dyed leather is not recommended to sit in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time as it will dry out and fade. Rare Early Georgian Figured Walnut Lowboy Table, Initials to top, Country House
This is a handsome and well aged antique early Georgian lowboy which dates to the 1700s. It is a modestly sized piece of furniture, not particularly large or heavy, so perfect for a room with limited space. The lowboy has a fantastic amount of character and was found in a rural country house in South Devon. Figured walnut with pine lined drawers the lowboy has a central frieze drawer, shaped apron and flanking deep drawers. It is set on chamfered legs with slightly swept terminals and to the top the initials’B. S. G’ have been carved on the left hand side. The wood has a polished finish and is very well aged. The lowboy is generally in good structural condition having been checked over in our workshop, cosmetically there are many marks of age and use with various patch repairs to the veneer on the table top. There are old inactive woodworm holes to one side panel and one leg has been repaired. The handles are most certainly a later addition and the lock to the central drawer is a later replacement. This piece is well aged and pretty ancient looking, perfect if you love old, well aged furniture. The measurements are taken at the widest points. You are welcome to collect in person or we can arrange a courier. Help may be required to unload. Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. London(usually Mondays and Tuesdays). North as far as Manchester. Please take a glance at our other items, we list new things every week. Our stock is constantly changing and updating and is quite varied and in many cases unique. We are a small family run company based in South Devon and have been restoring furniture for many years after deciding to turn our hobby into a business. We professionally restore antique and vintage pieces, painting some which need updating and preserving those which look handsome left untouched. We use traditional methods such as hand painting and French Polishing and all our paint is water based. We love anything old and antique and take great care in the preparation and repair of all items, treating old woodworm and fixing loose joints as a matter of course. This chair has been on a journey, as you can see from the pre-restoration pictures it came to me with a rather bulky modern upholstery on it, I carefully and painstakingly removed the modern fabric to find a stunning rare walnut framed early Victorian Howard & Sons armchair complete with some original distressed upholstery, they had even taken the time to cut out the little H & S initials from the fabric. The back leg is stamped with the serial number, the castors are Cope & Collingson which is the only company Howard & Sons would use as they could make them to Howard’s specification. The chair has been fully restored as you can see, its been reupholstered by a third generation Victorian upholsterer and then hand dyed this lovely tobacco brown colour by my leather polishers, simply put this chair is the finest example you will find anywhere today. Howard & Sons are simply put the finest chair makers in history, the Queen even has a private collection. Width:- 74.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. A History of Howard and Sons. The name of Howard and Sons is probably one of the best known and highly sought after names in Upholstered furniture. Over the next few paragraphs I will do my best to give you a brief history of the company. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a Cabinet Maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area. First to 27 Great Alie St (Now just Alie St) before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red lion St. This was also to be a big move towards what would be their next and most famous location. In 1848 they moved to a new address much more accustomed with the name; Berners St. London as Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and Decorator under the name John Howard and Sons. The business seemed to boom at this location with workshops opening up at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Sq and an expansion to a second Berners St building in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into the one building on Cleveland St. By 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These adresses would remain unchanged until 1935. During this period they became a limited company in 1899 and won the first of their Royal warrants in 1901. In 1935 the the well established decorators Lenygon and Morant appear to take over the name with the business address being given as 31 Old Burlington St (Lenygon and Morants premesis since 1909). Lenygon and Morant later moved to South Audley St where from 1954 they advertised as’Makers of Howard Chairs and Sofas’. In 1967 the owners of Lenygon and Morant open Howard Chairs Limited, the company operating from Lyme St continue to make high quality sofas and armchairs. Exhibitions and Important Houses. At the 1862 International Exhibition (The 3rd World Expo) Howard and Sons entered a suite of library furniture for which they won a prize. They also went on to exhibit at the Paris World’s Fair, called an Exposition Universelle twice; once in 1878 and again in 1900. Also at the Exposition Internationale d’Anvers 1894 (International Exposition/World Fair Antwerp). Winning Prizes at them all including 1 silver and 2 golds.
