Early 1900s Soccer/Football Boots. No branding – a common occurrence for football boots before the 1920s, when many boots were made by local shoemakers to order for teams. Instead of modern studs, these boots used wooden or leather strips (sometimes with metal reinforcement) nailed across the sole. This was an early engineering solution that provided better traction on soft or muddy grass. Increase the contact area with the ground, which prevented slipping. Prevent twisting of the foot – in those days, shoes were made quite rigid and dense to protect the foot.
