Original antique engraved portrait of. [John] Barlow from a sketch by Marcus Rainsford t. He engraving was included in Rainsford’s book An Historical Account of the Black Empire of Hayti, published in London in 1805. (Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row, London). Born into slavery, he rose to lead the only successful slave revolt in modern history, which established the first free Black republic. He was instrumental in the fight to end slavery in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), a key outcome of the revolution. A brilliant military strategist who fought against French, Spanish, and British forces, he was also a skilled politician who created a de facto autonomous colony and established a constitution that abolished slavery. Louverture’s achievements inspired oppressed people across the Americas and established him as a symbol of resistance against colonialism and slavery. Often hailed as the “Black Spartacus”, he earned a reputation as a brilliant warrior-statesman whose intellect and leadership drew comparisons to the great revolutionary heroes of the modern era. Rare antique engraved portrait in excellent overall condition with light aging/browning and some paper attached on back side to top and bottom; the tone is warmer in person shown in its entirety above at 9.5″ x 7.25″.
