Rare Antique 18-19c Sand Size Tesserae Roman Ruins Micro Mosaic Plaque, Pyramid
Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Rare Antique 18-19c Sand Size Tesserae Roman Ruins Micro Mosaic Plaque, Pyramid. Some time ago I bought out the drawers of an old jeweler’s workbench in Paris, and there were lots of gorgeous century-old hand carved Italian cameos and micro mosaics, all little works of art, and all passed down through generations of goldsmiths, jewelers. I love that, in France, many generations of a family stay in the family business, apprentice and eventually take it over, passing one generation to the next. This sale marked the closing, end of the line, and there were incredible treasures to be had. I only bought a few lots, and this is one. I’ve had them for a couple decades, myself. I’m nostalgic about such things. But it’s time to part with my own collections and I will offer each individually. This one is very early 1800s, perhaps even 1700s, Georgian era sand-sized tesserae and rare, a unique Roman ruins scene The pyramid of Cestius (in Italian, Piramide di Caio Cestio or Piramide Cestia) is a Roman Era pyramid in Rome, Italy, near the Porta San Paolo and the Protestant Cemetery. It was built as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a member of the Epulones religious corporation. A 30 mm x 24 mm but thin 3mm depth, adventuring or goldstone pristine plaque, no chips and no hairlines or damage. The tiniest glass tesserae, indicating very early work, there are a few missing at peak of smaller pyramid, area filled. It is eady to be mounted or just enjoyed in display as I have done. The colorful glass tesserae are all in place and ground smooth as silk to the touch. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Country/Region of Origin: Italy. From antique French sterling silver, Georgian – Victorian jewelry, Limoges or Sevres or fine porcelain, enamels, tortoise shell boxes, etui, necessaire; portrait miniatures, fine European paintings & tapestries, or Hermes to Rolex and uncommon & thrilling items of museum quality. Rare Early Heath Ceramics Sea And Sand Combed Studio Vase C. 1948
RARE EARLY HEATH CERAMICS SEA & SAND COMBED STUDIO VASE C. I have seen only one other Heath Sea & Sand studio vase in my 30 years of avid collecting. T he museum-quality v ase is o f impressive size and technique, featuring a hand-combed semi-gloss and heavily speckled Sand exterior with a rich high-gloss Sea interior. The hand-combed surface and basket f orm is reminiscent of California N ative American basketry, possibl y produced for exhibition purposes. T his piece is n ot commercial Heath Ceramics dinnerware, but is a studio vase made for exhibition. In fact, this is not a commercial f orm meant for production. This is the only example of this form a nd glaze combination I have ever encountered. The vase measures 6. 5 h igh with a 7. 5 diameter at the shoulder. The vessel is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. It is signed with the early Heath & Teacup mark. The vase exhibits an incredible amount of handwork including the deeply hand- combed exterio r. S tudio vases by Heath Ceramics are extremely rare and almost never appear on the market as most of them are already in private and museum collections. This unique and important Heath Pottery vase will find favor with collectors of Studio masters such as Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Marguerite Wildenhain, Vivika and Otto Heino, Bea Wood, Glen Lukens, Antonio Prieto and Peter Voulkos. Dont miss this opportunity to acquit th is rare and important piece. As one of the earliest examples of Edith Heaths studio work, it will find favor with collectors of Studio masters such as Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Marguerite Wildenhain, Vivika and Otto Heino, Bea Wood, Glen Lukens, Antonio Prieto and Peter Voulkos.
