Rare Antique 18-19c Sand Size Tesserae Roman Ruins Micro Mosaic Plaque, Pyramid
Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. Rare Antique 18-19c Sand Size Tesserae Roman Ruins Micro Mosaic Plaque, Pyramid. Some time ago I bought out the drawers of an old jeweler’s workbench in Paris, and there were lots of gorgeous century-old hand carved Italian cameos and micro mosaics, all little works of art, and all passed down through generations of goldsmiths, jewelers. I love that, in France, many generations of a family stay in the family business, apprentice and eventually take it over, passing one generation to the next. This sale marked the closing, end of the line, and there were incredible treasures to be had. I only bought a few lots, and this is one. I’ve had them for a couple decades, myself. I’m nostalgic about such things. But it’s time to part with my own collections and I will offer each individually. This one is very early 1800s, perhaps even 1700s, Georgian era sand-sized tesserae and rare, a unique Roman ruins scene The pyramid of Cestius (in Italian, Piramide di Caio Cestio or Piramide Cestia) is a Roman Era pyramid in Rome, Italy, near the Porta San Paolo and the Protestant Cemetery. It was built as a tomb for Gaius Cestius, a member of the Epulones religious corporation. A 30 mm x 24 mm but thin 3mm depth, adventuring or goldstone pristine plaque, no chips and no hairlines or damage. The tiniest glass tesserae, indicating very early work, there are a few missing at peak of smaller pyramid, area filled. It is eady to be mounted or just enjoyed in display as I have done. The colorful glass tesserae are all in place and ground smooth as silk to the touch. Full measurements are noted on the photos. Country/Region of Origin: Italy. From antique French sterling silver, Georgian – Victorian jewelry, Limoges or Sevres or fine porcelain, enamels, tortoise shell boxes, etui, necessaire; portrait miniatures, fine European paintings & tapestries, or Hermes to Rolex and uncommon & thrilling items of museum quality. Here is a early Capodimonte 15 inch tall figure in white and gold. It is a hard paste and in great condition. I was lucky enough to get six of these figures from a collector and this is one of the two large ones. At 15 inches tall it will show beautifully on a shelf or in a cabinet. These are getting very hard to find from this period c1830-70. No damage thank goodness! Hurry I have two figures listed so get a pair if you desire. Most of what is known of the ancient world comes from the accounts of antiquity’s own historians. Although it is important to take into account the bias of each ancient author, their accounts are the basis for our understanding of the ancient past. Some of the more notable ancient writers include Herodotus. A fundamental difficulty of studying ancient history is that recorded histories. Cannot document the entirety of human events, and only a fraction of those documents have survived into the present day. Furthermore, the reliability of the information obtained from these surviving records must be considered. Few people were capable of writing histories, as literacy was not widespread in almost any culture until long after the end of ancient history. The earliest known systematic historical thought emerged in ancient Greece. Beginning with Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Largely eliminated divine causality in his account of the war between Athens and Sparta. Establishing a rationalistic element which set a precedent for subsequent Western historical writings. He was also the first to distinguish between cause and immediate origins of an event. Was an ancient culture with a relatively high literacy rate. But many works by its most widely read historians are lost. A Roman historian who lived in the 1st century BC, wrote a history of Rome called Ab Urbe Condita. (From the Founding of the City) in 144 volumes; only 35 volumes still exist, although short summaries of most of the rest do exist. Century Roman Grand Tour Rosso Antico marble bath with Lion head detailing. This bath is stunning, I have never seen one of this size before, they are usually around 40% smaller, this must weigh 30kgs / 66lbs approximately. It has the Lions head to the front, rings either side, the marble is thick and with a beautifully veined patina. The marble on this is very thick and as mentioned it has a glorious vein, it looks to have a crack running all the way around, I dont think its ever broken because there are no signs of repair, it over 170 years old so we can forgive it some patina marks, most collector like to see some ware and damage, it helps to prove the age. Width:- 40.5cm. Depth:- 18.5cm. Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask.
