RARE EARLY 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE, SMALL, DIMINUTIVE 10 in HEIGHT, BURNT UMBER, BURNT SIENNA & SEPIA BROWN DIPPED over YELLOW OCHRE, HAND DECORATED, GLAZED OVOID STONEWARE CERAMIC HANDLED JUG. [Complex, variegated glaze color is achieved by dipping the yellow ochre glazed stoneware jug repeatedly in burnt umber, burnt sienna & sepia brown glaze, achieving the semi-transparent, layered colors we now see]. Early 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive ovoid shaped, hand decorated, handled stoneware ceramic jugs. 10″ Height x 6 1/2 ” Width x 4 ” base Width x 1″ Inner rim. X 1 5/8 Outer rim. Offered for your review and consideration is this subtle but still nonetheless very beautiful, hand decorated, early 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive, antique small, 10 in height, hand decorated ovoid stoneware handled ceramic jug. It features simply fantastic variegated brown, semi-transparent glaze in burnt umber, burnt sienna and sepia brown, hand dipped over an initial yellow ochre or putty white base glaze. The result is an incredible, layered symphony of overlapping color, resembling a work of fine art with layered color crepe paper. There’s only one slight, minor ceramic chip on the outside margin of the baseplate, where the sidewall meets the bottom. No attempt has been made to repair, conceal or otherwise minimize this honest and sole damage to the entire jug. The unglazed baseplate of the ovoid jug demonstrates its age and early, nearly 180 to 200 year old antique pedigree. A veritable, well-preserved gem from our collective New England primitive past. Good to Very Good overall antique condition. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Kitchen & Home\Dinnerware & Serveware\Jugs & Pitchers”. RARE EARLY to MID 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE SIGNED GOODWIN & WEBSTER OVOID, HANDLED, SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE JUG, with COBALT BLUE STAMPING on FRONT. SIDEWALL & COBALT BLUE SLIP GLAZE. On HANDLE TOP & BASE, WHEEL-THROWN. HANDLE & WIRE CUT BASE. Early to mid-19th century Ame ri can antique blue slip decorated salt-glazed stoneware jugs & crocks. 10 ½” Height x 6 ½” Width (Body). X 4 Base Width. This is a rare and very scarce early Ame ri can stoneware jug from a Boston, MA maker and early mercantile entity, especially in this kind of very well-preserved overall condition and especially with this coveted, early ovoid, antique form. There are literally no noticeable flea-bites or hairline cracks, bruises or glaze flakes on this outstanding piece of early Ame ric ana. There’s only a very small, slight bit of ceramic loss, right along the lower margin of the wire cut base, where the jug was removed from the throwing wheel. The salt glazed exterior now has a time-tempered, variegated range of color, involving putty white, pewter gray, yellow ochre and flashes of burnt sienna. The handle’s top and base have finger painted cobalt blue slip glaze ringed decoration. This is a magnificent, early Ame ri can, antique salt-glazed, ovoid stoneware handled jug, with Boston, Massachusetts provenance. Unabused, it largely escaped the ravages, trials and tribulations of time. The real, unbastardized and undisturbed deal. Simply gorgeous and in nearly originally constituted condition. If it wasn’t for the very small, slight bit of loss along the lower margin of the cut base plate, I could say with confidence that it was even in fact’museum-quality. Only a simple, small flea-bite and nearly unnoticeable amount of ceramic loss along its base, prevents me from making this unusual claim, especially for a piece of antique Ame ri can stoneware, that’s now between 170 to 190 years old. Very Good-Excellent overall antique condition. The item “RARE EARLY 19TH C ANTIQUE GOODWIN & WEBSTER, BOSTON MA OVOID STONEWARE STMPD JUG” is in sale since Monday, October 19, 2020. Rare and very beautiful ovoid form 2 gallon salt glazed jug with a stunning floral slip decoration that was hand-painted. In near perfect condition, with no cracks, hairlines, and only one very tiny thin chip on the rim and another on the underside edge (see pics). Stunning and very hard to find; the floral slip in blue is beautiful. The hand-painted method of slip application and the ovoid form, with no signature, and the wonderful early deep and dark patina all add up to this being made around and in the 1820s. Please also note what are brown spots under the glaze are just that, and are known as flashings, and came from other pots stacked in the kiln above it because of flashing during the firing process, either from pots stacked above this one or from the top of the kiln itself. These are amazing and add to the charm and character of the jug. Could this be a Southern piece? Hard to tell definitively, but a wonderful jug. 14.5 inches tall. About 10.5 inches in diameter. Opening on top is about 1 1/8 inches diameter. Weight is about 8 pounds not counting packing materials. It’s heavy and large so I won’t be too far off. The item “Antique Rare Early 19th C.
