Rare Early Victorian Solid Silver Owl & Mouse Mustard Pot 1851

RARE EARLY VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER OWL & MOUSE MUSTARD POT – 1851. This is a rare example of an early Victorian hallmarked silver Owl Mustard pot with hinged lid opening to show the mustard spoon with a mouse finial that fits in the Owls beak when closed. It is beautifully modeled with realistic plumage decoration all round. It has its original two colour glass eyes. There is a blue glass liner inside. It is 4 inches (10.5cms) high and the silver weighs 4.7ozs (146 grams) and is in really good condition with no splits or repairs, no pin holes, no engraving and the hinged head works and closes properly. The glass liner has no damage. The hallmarks are rubbed but show the Owl and the Mouse were made in London 1851 with makers marks G. R for George John Richards, who was only working from 146 to 1855.
