The inscription reads GEORGIUS II DEI GRATIA (George II by the Grace of God). The word LIMA under the king’s head signifies that the coin was struck from silver seized from the Spanish treasure fleet off Lima, Peru, during the War of the Austrian Succession. Obverse: LIMA below bust. Obverse Legend: GEORGIUS. II. DEI. GRATIA. Reverse: Shields in cruciform. Reverse Legend: F. D. B. ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T. ET. E. M. B. F. ET. H. REX. This coin is in impeccable order and has been handed down several generations and has always been kept in a lovely dry place. I’m told he (and my grandfather) always used to keep selected coins in a humidity controlled box (similar to a cigar box) which was atmospherically controlled to keep them dry and they were there right through George III and Victorian periods all the way through to George V period when it was finally handed down to my father. I inherited this coin in 1983 when my father passed away and I have always kept it in a perspex capsule and in a box with silicone sachets to keep it completely dry and tarnish free. I loved the unusual original box and used it for my cigars and had it in my possession until some years ago when sadly that along with a few other small antiques was lost (or stolen) during our house move. This coin has been cherished and lovingly looked after almost 2 75 years and is free from damage and scratches. It has only ever been handled with cotton gloves! I have carefully taken it out of the perspex capsule to photograph and placed it back in it after doing so. It will be extremely rare to find a silver coin this age in such remarkable condition. It is almost as if this coin in new. I hope to find it a good home and someone who will cherish it and look after it as my family have. Unfortunately my children have no interest in coins. Hence the reluctanct sale. George II was King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 11 June 1727 until his death in 1760.
