The drum measures approx 17 1/4 inches (435mm) long, by 7 1/2 inches (195mm) in diameter. It has a skin at either end, tensioned by numerous thin leather straps. As the drum was played the straps would be tightened and released by the drummer’s arm, in order to vary the tension on the drum skins, and thus vary the pitch of the drum as it was played. Hence the name talking drum. This is an antique drum, over 100 years old and, whilst the drum skins themselves are still in good condition, some of the leather tensioning straps have become dried out or broken with age, some have been replaced with string.
