RARE Early Antique J. BLATTNER, ST. LOUIS, MO. Brass Surveyor’s Vernier Compass
Posted by admin On July 23, 2021
Here we have a RARE Early Antique J. Brass Surveyor’s Vernier Compass. Jacob Blattner was born in Berne, Switzerland. Was thoroughly trained in the art of manufacturing precision instruments. In 1839, Jacob and his wife, along with his foreman and his foremans family immigrated to the United States. Blattner opened a shop at 24 Chestnut. 1840 as a mathematical instrument maker. His shop manufactured all types of mathematical, scientific and optical instruments. Offered a large range of surveyors compasses. His sole-proprietorship lasted until his retirement in 1871. The successor to Jacob Blattners operation of 30 years was the company, Blattner & Adam. The principals were Henry Blattner, Jacob’s son, and Frank Adam, Jacob’s son-in-law. This surveyors vernier compass has a silvered brass compass dial that is inscribed: J. The dial face is divided in eight sections with directional designations and a very nice large. The compass has an elevated dial edge with 360 degree graduation around perimeter. There is a finely sculpted steel needle. The bottom mounted needle lift/lock is missing its thumbscrew. There is a vernier adjustment knob which operates gears to revolve the compass, and a locking knob below the compass case. There is a tiny bit of damage on the edge of the vernier plate with an edge folding up. This doesn’t affect the function. See pics The top of the main frame is also outfitted with two upright sighting vanes. The vanes have slit, peep hole sights and can be removed for ease of transport. The bottom of the compass has a tripod attachment collar. Instrument is 16-1/2″ Long with 7-1/2″ tall vanes and a 6-1/4 diameter compass. This instrument has a very nice aged patina finish!! This is decent example of one of the St. Louis surveyor, scientific instrument makers that deserves a place in your collection. Please remember to leave Feedback. I will gladly reciprocate. Extremely Rare La 17th Early 18th Century Z Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass
Posted by admin On April 26, 2021
Swimming in the right direction? Extremely Rare Late 17th Early 18th Century Dutch Netherlands Marine Compass!!!! I say amaZingly because it is one of the most advanced designs of compasses for its time that I have come across! The needle is half white steel and half blackened steel, the white portion points North perhaps since Europeans are generally speaking white at that time, while the South is blackened since the south is primarily inhabited by darker folks, regardless the two different colors make it much easier and thus faster to differentiate between North and South, and the shape of the needle makes it much easier to follow even by someone with poor eye sight, extremely intelligent. Most likely created for the Dutch East India or Dutch West India Company, which could not function with-out such devices, the GPS of its time. It is the only compass I have eVer seen with a Z for south (Zuiden), which clearly and definitively indicate the compass is Dutch. The measurements of the wooden case are approximately 10.2 cm x 9.35 cm x 3.55 cm (4″ x 3 10.8/16″ x 1 6.5/16). The brass ring surrounding the compass is approximately 8.75 cm (3 7/16) in diameter. On the brass portion, the decorations, lines, and arabic numerals were all hand engraved by one of the worlds unknown but best compass makers I have eVer encountered. I have seen a Dutch? Compass, I inserted a question mark because the South was an S and not a Z, and of what I deem of much lesser quality fetch a sum of approximately 55 thousand USDs! So price-wise this beauty is a gift! The wooden case box is partially cracked on both sides, the crystal glass has some scratches as can be observed on the upper right quadrant of the second image and the upper left quadrant of the 5th image, and some points of oxidation (darker colored areas), but remains a fully functional and beautiful compass worthy of any museum! A great addition to any museum quality marine or scientific collection! Definitely a gift for any high level intellectual mind! Please feel free to check out my other Museum Quality Collection. For the year of our Lord 2019 I wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Sail Wisely & God Bless.
