A Rare Original Brass Capstan Candlestick/holder Dating to c1550. Capstan form with polygonal socket with conforming integral moulding. Probably flemish or dutch in origin. Double extraction holes, round-over-large rectangle, one has pierced through with use. The nozzle on a conicalflange above medial dished drip-pan on a spreading conical base on a steppedfoot. Dim: 8.5 cm high 8.4 cm base diameter A rare form of thisperiod, the hexagonal candle socket featureis the rarer form and an attractive feature more costly to make thanthe more typical round stem found. This is also the rarer small size at 3.5 inches, most being 4.5 and possibly made for travelling. Imagine what its seen! An antique brass lens of petzval design by a very early french lens maker. Alexis Gaudin Circa 1856. Engraved on barrel beneath the rack. Also signed AG 1856 on front achromat & 1856 on rear flint glass. 8/200mm speed approx. This lens is of typical petzval design. With a cemented achromat doublet lens at the front and 2 air spaced lenses(flint+crown) at the back. Both lens groups are set in their own housings indicating a quality construction. Cosmetic condition: The outside of the brass lens barrel shows much patina and wear commensurate with age. The barrel has been cut(rather crudely) at a later date in order to accept waterhouse stopsnone included! The front hood has some dings so no longer perfectly round! Optical condition: Optically the lens is clean / clear. On close inspection there are some small dust / cleaning / blooming marks / scratches / tiny edge chips to glass and a very small spot of separation on front element all normal for an antique lens of this age and nothing to affect performance. Mechanical condition: The rack and pinion focussing is working fine. I have tested on my Graflex 5×4 camera and this lens focuses a nice sharp image with. It covers the 5×4 plate/film format fine even at infinity. With a focal length of 200mmapprox. This lens is an ideal portrait lens on this format. Should also cover 1/2 plate/5×7 at portrait distancenot tested! THERE IS A FLANGE/RETAINING RING INCLUDED! Also a front cap(very worn). Visible front glass elements diameter: 5.7cm. Visible rear glass elements diameter: 5.7cm. Screw thread: 7.3cm. Outside diameter of flange: 11cm. Please look at all pictures and do not hesitate to ask any questions! A beautiful, seldom seen lamp, with an all brass construction,’daisy head’ joints, a weighted base Stamped’Dugdill Patent’ lovely patination to the brass, Later green glass shade has been added. Designed by John Dugdill this is one of the earlier lamps in the iconic Dugdills range. Rewired in a twisted black flex. These lamps are very scarce indeed and a real investment. A very fine and rare unusually large early 19. Century gilt brass Japanese bracket / table clock or Makura Dokei in need of restoration. The plated lantern type spring driven movement with balance wheel and verge escapement, the balance with silk suspension. Originally with striking and datework. Gilt brass case/frame beautifully engraved with foliate sprays and devices. Beautifully turned frame pillars. The going train is complete. A very fine and rare clock but in need of careful restoration. Please see images below. In unrestored condition and as seen. The whole clock retains its original gilding in exceptionally good condition. The movement is in very good condition but missing the striking train, he date wheels and the adjustable hour markers for the dial. The bow of the steel hand has broken off and is missing. The bell is original and rings perfectly. Overall height of clock to top of bell finial 13 cm (5 1/8). Top and bottom plates 11.7 cm x 6.4 cm 4 5. /8 x 2 1/2. Height frame excluding finials 8.8 cm (3 3/8). Packed weight 1.8 kg. Size 29 x 28 x 19 cm.
