Portrait of a Lady In Wide Brimmed Hat Besides A Window. A rare study of a lady in white attire, floral wide brimmed hat and foliage to the left section of the painting. Overall a charming study. Inscribed with the artists name to the reverse of the canvas. The painting is housed in a good frame which compliments the painting well. About Stanhope Alexander Forbes. Forbes was born in Dublin, the son of Juliette de Guise Forbes, a French woman, and William Forbes, an English railway manager, who was later transferred to London. He had an older brother named William, who, like his father, was a railway manager; William worked for the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway. He was married in the summer of 1889 to fellow painter Elizabeth Armstrong at Newlyn’s St Peter’s Church. Their first home was at the “Cliffs Castle” cottage, which overlooked the sea. They had a son named Alexander, nicknamed Alec. The couple had a home built for the family in Higher Faughan, Penzance. Elizabeth died in 1912. In 1915, Forbes remarried friend and previous student Maudie Palmer, who had been assistant, helper and friend to the whole Forbes family. During the First World War Forbes’ son Alec served under the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Alec died on the battlefield in August, 1916. Forbes died in Newlyn on 2 March 1947 at the age of 89. He was buried in the churchyard of Sancreed Parish Church. Modern frame is in good condition as well. Framed: W: 55 cm (21 1/2″) x H: 67 cm (26 1/2″) approx. The company was started by John Howard in 1820 trading from 24 Leman St, London as a cabinet maker. Over the next 25 years they would make several changes of premises within the Whitechapel area first to 27 Great Alie St. Now just Alie St. Before moving a short distance to 34 Great Alie St. In 1844 the company made its first venture into upholstered antique furniture by opening a showroom/workshop at 36 Red Lion St. Their next move in 1848 was to their most famous location, Berners St, London which was named John Howard and Sons, Cabinet maker, upholsterer and decorator. The business seemed to boom from this location with workshops opening at Tottenham St, Charlotte Mews and Fitzroy Square plus expansion into a second building on Berners St in 1853. In 1869 the company consolidated its many workshops into one building on Cleveland St and by 1872 the company was occupying 25, 26 and 27 Berners St. These addresses remained unchanged until 1935.
