Rare Antique (1920s) English Adams Pottery Lidded Ironstone Tureen (10.5/27cm, 1.2kg). Please browse all 12 photographs for size, weight and condition as they are self explanatory. Absolutely marvellous tureen in perfect condition. Superbly 24ct gold gilded and in excellent condition without any chips, cracks or crazing. Very rare to find such an item close to 100 years old in this condition. Needs to be seen and handled close up to be fully appreciated. The Adams family had potteries in Staffordshire , England, as early as 1650. At that date two brothers, William and Thomas had separate ventures in Burslem, Stoke on Trent, England. Such family activity continued for many years. William Adams and Company, with large potteries in Tunstall was managed by members who were the 11th and 12th generations in direct descent from the original 17th century Adams of Burslem. Whilst there is no longer an Adams pottery, some of their designs are still produced with their backstamp under the Wedgwood Group name. Adams joined the Wedgwood Group in 1966. The present Adams family trace their descent in a continuous and unbroken line from William de Adams of Burslem, born 1365, who died in 1417. The earliest record of an Adams producing pottery lies in the report of 1448 of William and Richard Adams (grandsons of the above) being fined for digging clay (obviously for the making of ceramic wares) by the roadside in Burslem. These two members of the family were both described in the Tunstall Court Rolls as Master-Potters and are the first to be described as such. Since William and Richard there have been seventeen generations of the Adams family, every one of which, with the exception of three generations in the sixteenth century, is known to have carried on the ancient and honourable craft. No family can show a comparable record to this date. This item is in the category “Pottery, Ceramics & Glass\Decorative Pottery, Ceramics & Glass\Figurines”.
