Rare Georgian Early Silver Jockey Cap Caddy Spoon Hallmarked 1798 Joseph Taylor
March 20, 2023
A fine George III early silver caddy spoon in the form of a jockey’s cap with bright cut engraved decoration denoting the stitching, a decorative star to the button on the top and foliate decoration framing a shield cartouche on the brim and further to the underside. It is finished with a shaped engraved “ribbon” at the back. Unusually with full hallmarks under the brim, a very early jockey cap caddy spoon, Birmingham 1798, maker Joseph Taylor. It measures 5cm (2″) long, 4cm (1 9/16″) wide and 1.7cm (5/8) high and weighs 7g. In good condition overall: there are two small splits to the ribbon section at the back. A neat and unobtrusive line of repair to a section of the join with the brim and also to a diagonal across the width of the brim, more clearly seen underneath. A few tiny nick marks to the shield cartouche suggest unsurprisingly an original engraving has been erased. No dents and the engraved detail is nice and crisp and the marks are clear.
