Rare antique lithograph after Marianne Colston'The Castle of Lourdes' 1821
This is plate 39 from Colston’s’Journal of a Tour in France, Switzerland, and Italy, during the Years 1819, 20, and 21′, published 1823 by G & WB Whittaker, London. The full title of the plate is’The Castle of Lourdes & Gave de Pau, Hautes Pyrénées, September 19 1821. Colston, née Jenkins, married into the wealthy and now infamous Bristol merchant family and immediately following her marriage, embarked on a three year European tour with her new husband. Her journal of the tour, and the drawings she made to illustrate it, are her only published work. This print is over 200 years old and has some slight toning at the margins, a few spots of foxing and a slight crease at the extreme top right. Otherwise it is in remarkably good condition for its age, with good colour retained. Not examined out of frame. Showing fishermen working on the River Ousse below the castle, the print is mounted, framed in a Hogarth frame (in good vintage condition) and under glass. Frame 39.5cm x 52cm, image 26.5cm x 38cm.
